Long Distance Review Time: 1852 Grill Room (Mackinac Island, MI) During our vacation this restaurant was highly recommended, through Yelp and some other foodie lovers. I can definitely see the appeal of the restaurant due to the beautiful ambience and incredible view of the harbor. Let's hope the food is just as fabulous? We were a little perplexed, due to first lack of service by the hostess and at the bar. We were a little early to our reservation, so the hostess said she will let us know when our table was ready at 5:30. She said the bar opens at 5:00, so we patiently waited at the bar for a drink. One would figure the hostess would let the bartender know there are guest, but I guess today was not that day. So we skipped on drinks, since 5:30 hit. Once again the hostess, did not come to get us for our table and sat a few other tables before us. So we decided to be proactive, and just went up to the hostess stand ourselves to make sure we were seated. Luckily, our server was there to save the experience. She was extremely nice and gave us wonderful recommendations on what to eat. We decided to try the appetizer tower, which had these massive fresh shrimp cocktail and decadent calamari. I was not impressed with the steak tartare, which had something extremely bitter in it. The absolute highlight was these extraordinary Italian spring rolls. They were filled with salami, prosciutto, banana peppers, mozzarella; and then deep fried.  We also decided to try the clam chowder, which was extremely fishy. For entrees, we had the extremely fresh and mild planked white fish served with creamy lightly seasoned mashed potatoes and tender asparagus. My Linguine ai Frutti di Mare was absolutely outstanding. The pasta was cooked perfectly; and the broth the seafood and pasta was tossed in was beyond delectable with a wonderful depth of flavor. Almost all the seafood was wonderfully fresh, except for musssels. For dessert, we decided to try the strawberry shortcake. I was not too impressed with the Chantilly cream, which tasted like basic whip cream. It seemed to need more sugar or some type of flavoring to bring it up a level to compete with the wonderful lemon biscuit and amazing strawberry compote. Overall review: front of the house needs to communicate with the rest of the team, but our server was wonderful (3.5) and food (bitter steak tartare, fishy clam chowder and mussels, bland mashed potatoes, and a boost to the Chantilly cream) (3.5/5) overall definitely not a bad meal, but some small tweaks could definitely be made to perfect this menu...

The food was okay. Absolutely nothing special. For the price I suggest checking out a different restaurant. My fish dinner was served just warm, fairly bland. My husband's prime rib was okay good size but chewy. We split an apple pie for dessert. It was served at room temperature. Not good. I wouldn't recommend it. Very expensive for the quality of the food. On the plus side very pretty view and a wonderful piano player.

Sat at the bar this evening due to no available reservation which was fine. Our bartender service was spot on. The couple sitting next to us at the bar were servers from the completing well established Resturant down Main aStreet at the Iroquois Hotel. They both recognized us upon eating at the hotel the previous night. Very disappointing this evening that the general manager didn't acknowledge us from being there the previously  and asking us to adjust our reservation due to availability. Thank goodness food and service was spot on! A simple hello and acknowledgement would of been nice!
