Absolutely lovely food. Nice flavours and beautifully presented. Attentive service staff. Came here for dining week and enjoyed it very much!
Open-faced sandwich , by Adam A - when in Copenhagen it's a must .. modern interpretation of the classic Danish rye bread sandwich..We took kitchens choice 5 "small" servings from the menu card , not small at all and very tasty .. herring , tar tar, potato (the classic of the classic) fish and chicken salad..Some juice also a non alcoholic lunch more appropriate would be to have taken a "snaps" to go with at least the herring.
Aamanns Etablissement is the premier place to get the unique Danish treat, smørrebrød. It is a quaint little restaurant not far from the national museum and some gorgeous parks. The service here was spotty by American standards, but when you aren't tipping you really shouldn't expect much. There also only seemed to be 2 servers for roughly 10 tables and the large crowd of never ending take away orders. I advise getting there before noon to avoid the rush. We decided to split 1 hot smørrebrød and 3 cold smørrebrød. This was too much food for 2 people. I'd suggest 1-2 cold smørrebrød (or 1 hot, it comes with 2 slices of bread) and the chef's selection of 3 canape smørrebrød for two people. My girlfriend loved everything we had. I like everything but I wasn't over the moon for the most part. I really enjoyed the warm liver pate with bacon and mushrooms. It was served with some gorgeous beets and herbs. It was a really wonderful combination. We also go the Pickled Herring, Potato, and Beef Tartare smørrebrød. They were good, but I think we were a little over adventurous with our selections. I could have used something simple like a cheese or roast beef sandwich. The Pickled Herring was good, except the put something very crunchy on it which gave me the unpleasant sensation of crunching fish bones. So while it tasted great, it was difficult to enjoy. We both really liked the Potato. The fresh vegetal taste of the potato was strange to our American palates, and we really enjoyed it! If the restaurant is busy take out is your best bet. And this place is a little pricey. But I think the quality of the food and presentation more than make up for it.
