My Mom, wife, and I had the pleasure of having Christmas Dinner at Alan Wong's this year. We found ourselves scrambling for dinner plans after the luau we were supposed to attend was canceled due to weather. Are we ever glad that our plans changed! Now, we've been to Alan Wong's before on previous visits to Oahu. The food has always been good, and the service on point. But tonight was a step above. Due to the last minute change of plans, we did have to settle for a early dinner, but we sat at what's called the "Chef's Counter." What a treat that was! Normally I don't like watching the kitchen work but this one was humming. Our servers were Michael and Mike. They were amazing! Our glasses and bread plates were always full. They made solid recommendations where appropriate. The manager, Kathy, made a point to stop by and check on us during our service. We started with a local dairy butter tasting. Yes. You read that right BUTTER TASTING. Two local Hawaiian butters were sampled along with one from the mainland. You could tell subtle differences with each butter. My wife and I shared the whole tomato salad and it was out of this world good. For dinner, the ladies both had the Kalbi-Style short rib that was fork-tender and flavorful. I had the ginger-crusted onaga. It definitely packed a punch! For dessert we split their take on a pineapple shave ice and the lilikoi bread pudding. The bread pudding was so good, my wife took a bite and shouted "oh my God" that even the chef heard it and smiled. Thanks again to Kathy, Michael, Mike, Brandon, Bronson and Chef Paul Matsumoto for making what could have been a disappointing Christmas dinner something special that we will always remember.
My boyfriend and I were visiting Honolulu for 3.5 days, and I was on the hunt to find the best restaurants in the area. Alan Wong's was listed as Obama's favorite restaurant in Honolulu, and we had to make a reservation! The experience in itself was all so interesting. First, the restaurant was located on the second story of a building off of the beaten path in Honolulu, about 20 min northeast from Waikiki. We arrived 4 minutes late (oops), in which they were already calling asking if we were missing our reservations. Once we arrived, the hostess told us that there would be a small wait and offered us to visit the bar while we wait. We decided to hold put as we did not expect a 30 minute wait... after around 20 minutes, the hostess then offered us a drink at the bar (on the house). The drinks were VERY strong and delicious. There were numerous photos of Obama posted all over the joint, especially near the front bar. Once seated, we chose Da Bag as an appetizer, the scallops as my entree, and the short ribs for the boyfriends entree. My boyfriend had the red wine flight as was not super fond of it, and I had a white wine. The meal came out to around ~$150 after all was said and done. I would recommend this spot to anyone in search of a fine dining experience while on the island. It is also fun to get away from Waikiki for a night, since mostly everything was located there for us.
