Pork kabobs are the go to here! Best pies around.
I was told via word of mouth by a person from the Pasadena area about Andys bbq so I thought it not being a franchise chain bbq restaurant like the typical city bbq places that it might just be one of those small mom and pop country style bbq places. I'll start by saying the location the atmosphere prices etc were great "but" I came mainly for the bbq as far as product quality, tenderness, presentation were above average now I've been on bbq cook off teams as well as judging bbq. The brisket, ribs were my focus they tasted like they had never been smoked not even a hint of smoked meat it tasted more like a baked and seasoned brisket as well as the ribs or else the meat was cooked on a pit then baked forever to make it so tender which removed the majority of the true bbq pit cooked flavor. I was very unimpressed with it being suggest pit cooked bbq. I guess they got me this time for a $100.00 tab with the ratings and reviews but not again I'll just drive up to an old back woods country bbq stand next time.
Well, today I went to have lunch with a friend and we ended up at a local BBQ spot in Pasadena Tx I never knew was there, located on 2826 Dedman St and called Andy's Hawg Wild Bar-B-Que. This spot is actually located in a neighborhood when pulling up to the spot it looked like a cozy place and I did hear someone mention it in a review I did about it being a gem that a lot of people don't know about so I thought it would be good to put it to the test. There were a lot of cars so that was a good sign and we walked in to see what this place had to offer. Over looking the menu we saw that it had everything that any BBQ place would have and I asked the guy working the counter how the BBQ was and what kind of wood they used. He told me the BBQ is the best and the wood used was Hickory.  Hickory is probably the most popular smoke wood used in BBQ, It has a strong flavor that compliments all meats. Some people find that hickory alone can be overwhelming, especially if too much is used. Most people mix it with oak using two parts oak to one part hickory.  I ordered the 3 plate meal With Brisket, Ribs, and Chicken my sides were potato salad and green beans and my friend ordered the 2 meat with Brisket and Chicken with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese being her sides. We talked and I explained to her how I reviewed BBQ we had a good conversation and the meal finally came out. One thing I noticed right away that the brisket had no Bark it was cut off and I never had brisket like that I picked it up and it felt right and I then tasted it and it was actually great flavorful and you could taste the hickory but I wondered why the bark was cut off. I asked one of the girls that worked there and she said she didn't know but she would go ask and came back with more brisket with the bark on it. She said the Pitmaster cut it off cause it was fatty and most people didn't like it but I was like if the fat is rendered the that's the best part... I tried what she brought me and it was really good... I don't know why they did it the other way but I give the brisket an 8 in taste in flavor... Up next was the Ribs and I must say these were really good the color in them was a light brown and they were a bit over cooked but the pork taste with that hickory was so good and my friend agreed with me that they were good. Last was the Chicken and I told my friend it was either gonna be good or dry and that it was hard to get the flavor of seasoning in the meat unless the skin was pulled back when they seasoned it. I must say that is chicken was perfect and the flavor was by far the best I had in chicken in a long time if it was me I would put it in a turn in a box at a competition and know I'd hit top ten with it... The sauce that was given to use on the side was a little too sweet for my taste but I know why they give it to cut the taste of the strong Hickory and it very much complements the meat well.  Sides were also good and I must say that this place is a gem and my friend Clarissa agreed with me. The price was not bad as my plate cost $13.99 and hers $11.99 they meat by the lb is as follows, Brisket $14.79 lb, Ribs $8.25 lb, Links $10.79 lb, Pork $11.79 lb, Chicken Whole $9.79, and Ham or Turkey $11.49. So if your ever in the Pasa-get-down-dena area this is a spot you need to check out Smokin Willy T saying "If you want good BBQ to go out and find it, I guarantee a place won't be too far from you.."
