It brings me no joy to say this because I really have nowhere else to get bagels: Bagelworks bagels are extremely mediocre bagels by NY standards. I know this is a good neighborhood place with a loyal following. I know the atmosphere is authentic. That's what makes this review so unpleasant for me. But ultimately the bagels are just not good. The hole is too big, the bagels are small, they aren't at all chewy, they have no body, they collapse when you pick them up, the taste is so-so. In short, I feel almost like I'm eating regular old bread with poppy seeds splattered on top. I've even had some borderline raw bagels here. That being said, every other bagel joint in the area is even worse, so I will reluctantly continue to patronize this establishment. I leave this review not to vent but to hopefully give the owners some ideas about how they can further cement their status as the best bagel-meisters of the east 60s.
