This place is certainly a delight to have around and lends itself to a very hipster study vibe. Great for in between study break snacks or sam’itches these people can cook and their pastries are magical. This is the first place I am taking my wife when she gets into town sometime next year.
Always a great place to stop by and get a coffee, scone, unique pop tarts, cupcakes or one of their fantastic light lunches.
Saturday or Sunday morning at the Pearl can be absolute madness, and Bakery Lorraine is near the center of the frenzy. I once thought the crowds alone would prevent even a hint of comfort or relaxation, but to my genuine surprise this café / bakery was an island of calm. Yes indeed, during this time of 6-foot distancing, lines seemed unbearable. They trudged and protruded from both the walk-up window and the front door. Shuffling carefully from one floor sticker to the next, my party did have to wait a solid 15 minutes. But once inside, the insanity was hushed. Masked people politely moved about tables that miraculously remained open here and there until our order was placed. Another surprise: We didn't have to wait an eternity for our food. Maybe time sped up a little because it was fun to have a clean table near a huge window so the unicyclists, foreigners, and pedigreed dogs could be seen zooming by outside. The inside was entertaining too. There were black and white artworks on the wall and lots of energetic youngsters (also clad in black and white) flying around filling orders. In exchange for our numbered placard, our server gave us, among other things, a Croque Madame. I was expecting an egg on a ham sandwich, but instead I received a gift draped in white. The neat egg and toast geometry was encased in a gooey white blanket speckled with green. It was beautiful. I took my time with this Madame. So few things in life whisper "eat me slowly." I would brave the lines at Bakery Lorraine again. They're unavoidable no matter where you go on a weekend morning around the Pearl anyway.  (And the coffee here is good.)
