Owesome view and atmosphere!
Messing with reservations is annoying...
While recently renovated, and boasting a gorgeous view of the Danube, there are nevertheless and unfortunately a number of standing problems with this restaurant. . I've eaten here over a dozen times, mostly with other friends and business colleagues, and certainly Balkan Express has a great view. But the execution of the menu is, frankly, awful. . My best guess is that the owners have made the beautiful renovations possible at the expense of quality control and consistency with the menu. . There are tricks of the trade, to make pre-made and flash-frozen parts of the menu (like pastas and sauces) seem like they are not such - and these are tricks of the trade that Balkan Express needs to learn. . The wait staff needs to be more attentive, this is standard - and I'm comparing this not to my own standards from back home in Los Angeles, but to what's comparable here in Belgrade, Serbia. . Salads and other fresh veggies aren't so fresh.. .. The pastas and related sauces are clearly frozen, and aren't freshened up or disguised very well. .. Prices have shot up, but recently Belgrade in general has suffered from some restaurant price inflation which is above and beyond general inflation - and this is going to hit restaurants very hard. Perhaps there is some new tax or new code enforcement that's driving local restaurants nuts - but passing these costs on to consumers is perhaps inevitable, but certainly is having a bad effect on business. .. The Corn-flakes and peanuts chicken was one of palatable dishes here, until they also seem to have changed the recipe - opting to change over to a lighter colored peanut sauce with much less texture, less peanuty, and therefore less interesting and less memorable on the palate. . Two days ago I had the ravioli in tomato sauce - frozen and frozen - they tried to cover/conceal the metal can taste or the ravioli by over sweetening it - but a fresh tomato sauce is never this color or this ... sweet and one dimensional. Tomato does and should have tang - this is not my personal preference but a matter of what a Tomato is and ought to be remain in a Tomato sauce. It seemed like the mixed ketchup together with a canned base, through in a dried tomato to create the illusion of something else - but this failed. . Guys - get your act together!! A beautiful place is ... beautiful - but your menu needs serious work. . I'll be discouraging folks from dining here, for going here for anything more than coffee and a dessert (which you have a van deliver probably 3 days a week from elsewhere).
