As much as I hate to write this, our recent dinner at Barrel & Board was the worst dining experience my wife and I have had in a long time. The service and staff, while very pleasant, were slow and indifferent, and the overpriced food ranged from bland and tasteless to extremely over-seasoned. We initially wanted to try the restaurant because we heard they had a great charcuterie board, and the meal got off to an ok start, as the cocktails we ordered were tasty. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. We started with the $32 cheese board. In fairness  the presentation is very nice, and you get a decent selection of fresh fruit, nuts, and bread. Unfortunately, the three cheeses we were served were the most bland, awful, tasteless cheese we have ever eaten. The first warning sign should have been when the menu said we got three "chef's selection cheeses". There is no info on the menu as to what the actual cheeses are. The second strike was when the server delivered the board. Not only did she not explain at all what our mystery cheeses were, but we were never given napkins or utensils, and we had to flag her down to get a knife to eat the cheese with. Before she came back, I tried one of the green marbled cheeses. My wife asked me if it was a blue cheese, and I said that I had no idea, because it had no taste whatsoever. When the server came back with the utensils, we asked what the cheeses were. Her response was, "oh, I'm not sure. I think one is a cheddar? And I call that one the green veiny one." We were a bit stunned that the server at a place known for its cheese board didn't have the slightest clue what any of the cheeses were. It was pretty clear that the "chef's selection" was simply a way to do a massive markup on cheap, tasteless cheeses without having to tell the customer what they are buying. The board was so disappointing that we talked about asking for the check and going to have dinner somewhere else. But we decided to give B&B one last shot at the main course. Although that was after we again had to flag down the waitress, who had not come back to check on us or take our dinner order. Our decision to stay for dinner was a mistake. Like the cheese, my pappardelle pasta was completely bland and tasteless. Conversely, my wife's steak was so salty and smothered in so much pesto chimichurri sauce that it was unpleasant to eat. I know Barrel & Board largely has excellent reviews, and perhaps our experience was an outlier. But our food was really bad and overpriced, and the servers, while very nice, weren't particularly attentive or helpful. Needless to say, we won't be going back.
