Some of the best street tacos I've had!
Overall the tacos/meat were tasty well cooked and seasoned the tortillas were handmade I believe and not bad at all. My favorite tacos were the fish ones i definitely recommend them the chipotle sauce that came with the tacos was very good! The only problem I have with big star is that it’s over hyped and the restaurant itself is too crowded tables are to close to each other, seats were uncomfortable and tacos are definitely overpriced! The food itself isn’t authentic Mexican! I’ve had better tacos/Mexican food for way cheaper at other restaurants with better atmosphere!
I first visited Big Star the week that they opened. I ended up back there less than a week later trying everything on the menu with a big group of friends. This was back when they were cash only and had $2 tacos and $4 chips and guac. Over the years I have gone there countless times and seen all of the extensions they continue to make. The patio, the indoor patio, the vestibule for their walk-up window. The menu changes frequently enough that you won't get bored. The static menu items like the panza, pesacdo and al pastor are typically what I order. But there are some really great seasonal options. I usually prefer the walk-up window these days because their service hasn't always been my favorite. I'll go inside if I really want queso fundidio (which is not available to go) or if it is not very busy and I am looking to have drinks. Cocktails are ok- but I'd rather go across the street to the Violet Hour if it's cocktail time. Their beer list is good and the daily $3 whiskey shot is not a bad deal. It can get quite loud inside, and I've definitely fought my way through the crowd on several occasions before all of the additions.Overall the food has always been the biggest draw, for me. The service inside can be a drag. As can be the long waits for a table during peak times. Generally, I really like the place; it is convenient, consistent and it offers an enjoyable patio in the summer. I even saw the Stanley Cup there once! And it is near one of my most frequented intersections in Chicago. The walk-up window is my favorite thing about this place. One of the cashiers who worked the window when they opened knew my sister and I well. The horchata is almost impossible to decline on a hot summer day. I just don't often plan to dine in because of how loud it can be, how busy they can get and past service experiences. But the food is good enough that a few service indescresions have not pushed me away for good.
