We got there at about 2:45 and they were closed for brunch and would open again at 4 so we decided to wait and I’m so glad we did. We also chose to sit inside and once again I’m so glad we did. The inside is charming and has an old house feel to it. So much character which I love. The waitstaff were very friendly. I am sad that I forgot to take a pic of the charcuterie board because it was delicious.
Jarred had the shrimp and grits with jalapeño gravy and gave me a sample. It tasted green but in a good way and had some spice to it but not overly spicy which I like cause I’m a wimp. I had the salmon with lump crab meat and crawfish risotto with charred lemon butter sauce and I died and went to heaven. It was supposed to be red fish but they were out. I’ve never had red fish so I don’t know how the taste would have been different but salmon worked very well with it. It was flaky and flavorful and the risotto creamy and delicious. Just amazing.
And then there was the dessert. I had the chocolate cake which was so rich and dense and came with whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries. You could see the flecks of vanilla bean in the house made whipped cream and the strawberries added a pop of flavor and an added dimension to the chocolate cake and the tartness of the fresh fruit mellowed out there sweetness of the fudgy cake.
I almost wish we would have had a bad experience cause then I wouldn’t be so sad about it closing. But now that we’ve been and know how wonderful this place is it makes me even sadder to see it go. And I feel guilty because Bird Cafe has been on my list of want to go places for at least five years. It will be missed.
