I took my babe for a mud bath massage excursion in Calistoga, then went to dinner at the Brasswood Bar + Kitchen. Let me just say it was was simply amazing. The Service and food were top notched-but the ambience outside with lights was the best. If you got the time and money take your babe here, she will absolutely adore it. One last plug, you have to order the fresh mozzarella, it's to die for...enjoy. pmj~
My wife, eldest daughter and I had dinner here Sunday, September 1 after a full day of wine tasting. The location is a bit out of the normal, sort of an internal strip mall made to appear chic.  So it's not a cute of the main road place like a Brix or something historic in an old downtown building. That being said the food is AMAZING.  We tried 3 appetizers, the house special buffalo mozzarella on crostini, pork & beef meatball w/polenta and a sweet corn soup/chowder.  All were amazing, the mozzarella is cut and served directly for you on the table and the meatball and polenta outdid the description, the arrabiata sauce really made this dish.  I typically had corn based soups but Brasswoods version did a pretty amazing job on this. Entree's where the Duck with Risotto, Chicken Picatta and Spaghetti with clams and mussels.  All three meals were fantastic, best of three probably a toss up between the Duck (I don't know how they did the Risotto but it was subtle yet very flavorful) and while Spaghetti sounds pretty plain, the white wine sauce was that you used the bread to soak up everything with. Why only 4 stars.  I don't know why but the restaurant was FULL of flies.  The doors weren't open but they were everywhere buzzing around you, your food, the windows and it wasn't just could see everyone in the restaurant swatting.  I'm guessing earlier before service maybe someone opened the doors or the back for delivery but it was pretty bad.  Not saying it was dirty, the restaurant appeared very clean.  Still a bit of a bummer. Definitely recommend giving them a visit however.
The reason why I chose to eat at Brasswood is their off-the-menu made to order mozzarella. It came approximately 10 mins after we placed our order. The mozzarella arrived in a plate of olive oil, with 4 pieces of toasted bread on the side. The server cuts the cheese into 4 long slices, places it on the toast and drizzle the remaining olive oil onto the cheese. Flavourwise, it was very mild. I wished it was slightly more milky. The texture was good though, slightly stretchy and chewy with a soft interior. We also ordered a grilled ribeye nicoise salad and duck risotto. The steak salad exceeded my expectations! The steak was seared medium (as requested), well seasoned and was tender. It was still slightly warm when it was served, suggesting it was freshly grilled. I also really enjoyed the risotto. The duck leg was not overly salty (common for duck confit) and moisture was retained in the meat. I don't usually eat the skin, but I couldn't resist after seeing the nicely seared/broiled skin and minimal fat underneath it. The arborio rice was well cooked and had a nice vibrant colour.
