This is the greatest spot near Hayes Valley. If you are fond of French cuisine, come to this restaurant. You can always enjoy nicely cooked smoked salmon, moules marinieres and goat cheese salads at Chez Maman West. Ordering good gelato, tarte tatin and fruitcake is what a number of clients advise. Very nice French bistro at prime street corner location. Decent food and great atmosphere seating outside, although it can be pretty loud. The food was not surprising. Beef tartare was kind of flavorless. The prime steak was somewhat overcooked. One of the veal was totally unsalted. Need to improve on food consistency and quality. My friend and I ate here the other night and it never disappoints. This is my fourth time at this spot and they have by far the best french onion soup in San Francisco. Droppin off my Halkins 50 and the Sharps 45-20 to my pal Marc Miwords downtown on Gough street, him an Casper Joe Wiggins pulled black powder tags for special back country snowshoe trip up in Hell's Canyon. I parked about as close to his place as I could, and it just happened to be right near the Chez Maman West Restaurant. Casper tells us about the best soup he's ever had was from Chez Maman, so we had some delivered. It was cold outside and the breeze made it about as evil as a poked bobcat. But, I think it being cold outside made the soup even better, that and a little hot sauce. It was Spectacular! 5 stars
