Food and service was very good.
Good food, very authentic!
When craving hot Chinese food on a cold day, Chow House is sure to hit the spot. It's the type of restaurant that's crowded with good reason, so don't get too thrown off when you walk in and see a line for a table. On a Saturday night, I waited a little under half an hour for a table for two - unfortunately their Yelp waitlist wasn't up and running but it wasn't too bad of a wait. My friend and I got seated and immediately ordered, having studied the menu while waiting for our table. There are tons of classic options for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. I opted for the pan-fried vegetable dumplings to start, along with the vegetarian mapo tofu for my entree. My friend ordered spicy pork dumplings and chicken lo mein. The dumplings came out pretty quickly after ordering. The vegetable ones were really good - pan-fried was definitely the way to go - and my friend loved the pork ones. I tasted the spicy sauce that bathed the dumplings and wow - it was divine. Then the entrees came out and we realized we were way in over our heads. Both the lo mein and mapo tofu were massive; we easily could've split one entree between the two of us. I've been scouring the city for a good vegetarian mapo tofu (it's often made with pork), and Chow House's was delicious. It was piping hot and just the right amount of spicy. I asked for a side of white rice, which was definitely necessary to mop up the mapo sauce. My friend enjoyed her lo mein as well. We made our best effort to finish as much as we could but ended up taking a lot of leftovers home. Everything was reasonably priced for the quantity (and quality). The service was good - the staff was nice and attentive - and most importantly the food was really tasty. Highly recommend next time you're looking for excellent Chinese food in the city!
