I was attending a conference and staying in downtown Philly near City Hall, and after my sessions were completed I walked to my old haunts in Old City Philadelphia. So many wonderful college memories (like visiting the Liberty Bell when it was still in Independence Hall, sticking my head inside it, and knocking on the Bell vigilorously. Nowadays one must walk through a metal detector just to see it) Anyway, if I recall the City Tavern was rebuilt prior to the bicentennial in 1976 off of the original "blueprints" just a few feet from where the structure originally stood. I love our County and Founding Fathers, and know that they spend much time in off session discussions within the Tavern. I recall that someone's memoirs describe "seeing Dr Franklin turn to stone while drinking Madeira." ( I wish I'd been there to party with Ben!)  I could never afford eating at the City Tavern whilst in college and during post graduate education, but vowed that some day I'd return and buy the most expensive thing on the menu. I never did that because some of the wine prices are astronomically high). I ordered a salad, meat dinner (wasn't vegan at the time) bread, potato, mixed vegetables, and a small cheesecake for $40.99. The service was exceptional, the food quite good, and the environment right up my historic alley. If you're in Old City Philly and want a memorable meal, treat yourself and your honey and/or family to a meal at the City Tavern, but DO NOT stick your head inside the Liberty Bell

I went to City Tavern Restaurant for the first time weeks ago and I have to say, I'm hooked. I had heard about the place through a friend who recommended it and was intrigued by its history. I love learning about how restaurants got their start, so this was right up my alley. My waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu, which is always appreciated because it shows that they care about their customers' experience. The food was amazing, but what stood out to me was how accommodating they were to my dietary restrictions. They knew how much time and effort it takes to make something gluten-free, so they didn't hesitate to do what they needed to do to make sure my meal tasted great too! If you're looking for an incredible dining experience with authentic decor (and no pretense), then City Tavern Restaurant is worth checking out!
