So for lunch, there was 5 of us and we booked here for the winter special. Food and wine pairing menu, 3 or 4-course meal inclusive of all wines. We opted for the 3 courses (2 Starters and a main meal plus a glass of paired wine with each course).

We were shown to a lovely table on the enclosed balcony overlooking the Stellenbosch mountains. Ashlin was our waitress and looked after us for the afternoon.

We started with a welcome drink (Sauv Blanc Sparkling Brut) and some fresh bread rolls with butter and olive oil.

The first round of starters:
Salmon and Prawn, Marinated fennel, fennel leaves, crispy capers, saffron aioli and red pepper essence, paired with Clos Malverne Sauvignon Blanc. The Salmon and Prawn came in a pancake and was a bit disappointing as the prawn and salmon were minced to small. Think it would have been better with bigger chunks of prawn and salmon to get the texture correct.

Baked Potato and Leek Soup, Garden peas, truffle oil, crispy bacon, spring onion and parmesan melba toast paired with Clos Malverne Chardonnay. This soup seemed to be a bit too many things at once - Baked Potato, Leek and garden peas. Not a bad tasting but too much in the bowl. The parmesan melba was great thou.

The second round of staters:
Springbok samosa, Smoked whole grain mustard puree, pickled baby radish, coriander salsa, lemon crème Fraiche, shimeji mushrooms, paired with Clos Malverne Cab/Merlot. This was my dish of the day, tasty and the shimeji mushrooms finished off the dish perfectly.

Thai style mussels, Pickled ginger, dried chilli, micro herbs and freshly baked bread, paired with Clos Malverne Sauvignon Blanc. Was more like a soup and seemed out of place.

Rooibos smoked aubergine, Roast red pepper, heirloom tomatoes, sesame seeds and violas (Vegetarian), paired with Clos Malverne Cab/Merlot. Looked and tasted great.

Main meals:
Linefish(kabeljou), Seasonal vegetables, fennel mash, butterbeans, dill, provençal sauce, paired with Sauvignon Blanc. Fish was great and the mash was tasty. The butterbeans were an odd addition.

Slow Roasted Confit Duck Leg Horseradish mash, wilted pak choi and five spice jus, paired with Clos Malverne Pinotage Reserve. Was juicy and tasty with good tasty mash.

Chalmar Beef Fillet, Potato croquet, exotic mushrooms, heirloom baby carrots and green peppercorn sauce, paired with Clos Malverne Auret. Was ordered medium rare but once you cut through the middle there was only a grey and not that vibrant pink colour you would expect. Still tasted good.

Pasta Tagliatelle, Red pepper Coulis, confit tomato, grana padano, capers, kalamata olives, and crispy basil (Vegetarian), paired with Clos Malverne Cab/Merlot. Was great tasting and the dish of the day for our vegetarian.

We had a wonderful afternoon with great company, good service, stunning views but the food was just a bit directionless. Some of the flavours were good but just nothing really stands out. Each dish had nothing wrong with it but it could have been more refined. I'm not sure if we will be back here in a hurry. Clos Malverne Wine Estate, Restaurant, Accommodation & Spa's teeth rating:
