Vegan: What an easy introduction when trying to deliberately go vegan. Every vegan moment apparently helps. This great business needs to reach out to the Off The Grid event each Friday just a couple of blocks away. They should offer samples to the thousands of potential customers at the Lake Merritt BART Station. The student body and faculty at Lahey College are another great target. The traditional flavors and unique are cool refreshment year 'round.

Normally an all-vegan ice cream is something to get excited about. But D&H isn't all that good by today's standards, especially if you've had the amazing vegan ice cream in LA or New York. The ice cream here is old-school vegan, circa 2005: strange texture and potentially artificial flavors. It reminded me of Tofutti ice cream, as opposed to the creamier, real ingredients of Luna & Larry's. I sampled a bunch of the dozen offerings and didn't really like any of them. I went with a scoop of the mint chocolate chip ($4) because it had the creamiest texture and the mint flavor wasn't overpowering. They also have a couple sorbets. I enjoyed the coconut sorbet, which was surprisingly creamy and natural-tasting, but that's so basic a flavor as to not warrant much attention. I guess it's nice that D&H is around, but if you've had Van Leeuwen/Afters/Gingers/Salt&Straw/Small Batch in LA or the dearly-departed Lula's in NYC, D&H will seem laughable. It's a throwback to the old days of vegan ice cream, but it didn't make me feel nostalgic.

I can't tell you, as a rebelliously lactose-intolerant person, how excited I was to find out that a dairy free ice cream shop has opened dangerously close to my house.... I couldn't wait for the opening! D&H is clean and well lit, simple in decor but rich in its offerings of yummy vegan treats! They were happy to serve up plenty of samples until my +1 decided on her flavor (banana chocolate chip) and I went for Bacio (chocolate with hazelnuts, walnuts and pistachios)... YUM! After being served, my kiddo promptly dropped her scoop on the floor, and before I even noticed, the server was at our side with a brand new scoop for her Street parking can be tough in that area, but it's worth circling the block to get to this place!! Super close to BART and Laney - hope to see this place do well!!
