Yes, it has two Michelin stars and yes, the gastronomic wizardry is mostly top notch. BUT, I'm not so sure it ranks terribly highly in fine dining restaurants I have eaten in. Maybe we are just tiring of the whole molecular gastronomy thing... Anyway, there are 25 (yes, 25!) courses on the SMALLER tasting menu, 30 on the longer!! What that means is an awful lot of running around from waiting staff and an awful lot of dish swapping. This all adds up to a slightly nervy feel - relaxed it is not. There are so many dishes and staff that it all begins to feel rather gimmicky. There's even staff stood outside the toilets downstairs - to what end, I have no idea! Anyway, to the food. I'd have to say, I thought it was lacking in flavour and substance. The carbonara, for example, was one of those slightly pointless molecular dishes - and wasn't as tasty as my own home cooked version! Gelatine pasta made from stock imitating pasta - er, why? It maybe should have been very flavoursome, but it just wasn't. There sucet was okay, but I've had better - and did have two days later - with actual pieces of fish and shellfish in it! There was just too little "fine cooking of fine ingredients" on offer over and above the various foams and gels... No context: unbalanced. Oh, and the deserts were really very poor! All in all, an odd experience, and not one we would repeat.
What an incredible meal! I've eaten at multiple Michelin rated restaurants and this is my current favorite. Absolutely every dish was both beautiful and delicious. The service was warm, helpful, and prompt. We'll definitely be back to try the seasonal tasting menu!
There was ingenuity in each of the 25 courses. Amazing!
