Best sushi in Hilo, hands down. And the most reasonable prices. It’s also made with brown rice instead of white and never with MSG. Great options for vegans, too!
Hands down best sushi in Hilo! Fresh everything and great prices. Their wasabi is really good too! I hate going to sushi places and their wasabi is dull. Meaning, it doesn't make me cry. But Dragon Sushi's wasabi does the trick. You'll find that many sushi places on the Big Island uses more local style sushi rice. But they use normal sushi rice (that sweet, vinegar taste). They only use brown rice, but it tastes exactly like normal rice, trust me. Other than their rice, I don't eat brown rice (refuse to, more like). Their sushi is very authentic. My sister came to visit and tried their sushi for the first time and she said the sushi chef's techniques are very authentic as well (she's been to Japan many times). The chef and (his wife maybe?) don't really speak English, but they try to show you as much gratitude as they can. As you leave, they constantly tell you "thank you" and bow. It's located in a small hole in the wall near the Hilo Farmer's Market with a couple of other restaurants. Not much seating, but it's fine. Hopefully he gets his own place one day!
Even though it's in a small food court, the sashimi was very fresh. The use of brown rice is their signature and it tastes just as good as white sushi rice. If you're health conscious, it will make you feel better about eating it - LOL I also enjoyed the Soba Salad containing Japanese Buckwheat noodles, nice fresh veggies and tasty green Hawaiian ogo (seaweed). The peanut miso dressing was reminiscent of my aunt's recipe. I would definitely go again!
