We reserved a table for the 6-course tasting menu for 2 people (one vegetarian, one non-pork eater). We were previously sent a PDF by email with a description of the courses and prices to accompany the drinks. A non-alcoholic beverage accompaniment was also listed there, but this was not available on site when requested. Since I don't like drinking alcohol, only my partner chose the alcoholic drink accompaniment. The alcoholic welcome cocktail was very solid, but unfortunately things went steeply downhill after that. The first course was served for both people on one side of a large plate, which the waitress turned over several times until she finally seemed to have found the "correct classification" of vegetarian / non-vegetarian (one side was "marked" with a leaf). . After I took a bite of the second bite, I immediately tasted that my vegetarian bites were actually the ones with fish. For a restaurant that wants to appear so professional, something like this really should never happen. I then completely lost my appetite. We brought this to the waitress's attention and the plate and the remaining half of the food were cleared without any comment. Then we were served the second course and were very confused. In general, as a guest, you were not accompanied communicatively through the evening, as we know from other upscale restaurants (e.g. the right drink for the course only came upon request). Although the staff's English was a lot better than what people on the street are used to, there were some things we couldn't understand. At some point we were told without apology that there had been a confusion in the kitchen. I'm lucky that I'm just voluntarily following the dietary restrictions and don't have an allergy - especially with shellfish (which was included in the first course), the mix-up could have ended really badly. After the second course we had the first course again, only this time completely vegetarian, although my partner would have loved to try the fish nibbles. We half-heartedly got an extra course as an apology, which unfortunately was by far the most disgusting dish I've ever been served in a restaurant. I can happily do without that. We were also given a 10% discount on the final bill as an apology. If the rest of the dishes had been at least good, then we could have overlooked all of this, but unfortunately everything was really disappointing in terms of taste. We had previously imagined Mexican fine dining ideas (what you could combine), but the dishes here were flat, oversalted, uncreative and tasteless. We can 0% understand the taste explosion that some people report here. The vegetarian dishes were all overly acidic (very vinegar-heavy), so you couldn't taste anything else. According to my partner, the drink accompaniment was also very inappropriate. At times the taste of the drink completely overshadowed the taste of the food. The drinks were also very meat-heavy (e.g. with chicken broth), and the red wine (Tempranillo) was served at a temperature of Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: MX$1,000+ Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 4

Chef Mario is aiming very high. Many chefs do, but he is hitting the mark. Different, distinctive, delicious. We had the six-course tasting, and five of the courses were knockout great. Another reviewer here mentioned his tomato soup as just another tomato soup, taking space from courses to come. It must have been a different dish than the tomato soup dish he served my wife and I last night. We have had tasting menus at Destilado over half a dozen years, with four different chefs. They were all quite good. Last night was great, remarkable. Our server Emmanuel was excellent. Chef visiting our table and commenting on the menu added to the experience. For something different in Oaxaca, but with all local ingredients used in some new ways, we love El Destilado. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
