El (Scaro) Romero Restaurant - Mijas.
We tried this place on a Tripadvisor rating/recommendation, but I think that rating must have been as a result of postings by friends of the establishment. This is what our food loving group; consisting of a Spaniard, a chef and two excellent cooks, ordered and what was delivered.
1. Two people ordered medium rare steaks - both steaks were differently cooked, one being medium rare(ish) and the other verging on well done. Both steaks were fatty and neither person enjoyed or could eat much of their steaks.
2. One person had the mixed meat grill, some of which was undercooked and the rest overcooked and/or tough.
3. Two people ordered salmon steaks - both steaks were dry and crispy on the outside and rare near the middle. Though mostly edible they found their steaks far from enjoyable.
4. Finally, one person ordered the turbot, which was a definite health hazard being over cooked and dry around the edges and raw in the centre. Fortunately, this was discovered before any was eaten.
When we complained, staff removed the turbot immediately asking if they could replace it, but the person was so put off by the initial offering - and what was on the other plates - that he refused a replacement. As for the mixed grill, the waiters response was that it was not possible to get this right for everyone! We suggested that cooking it properly should be all that’s required. We were also treated to a list of the qualifications of the staff, hardly appropriate considering their complete lack of being able to demonstrate this by cooking food properly, e.g. if you’re going to cook food from frozen (yes we could tell) - such as the turbot and salmon - ensure it’s defrosted first and you won’t have an over cooked outside and a raw inside! The other plates were not reported because by this time it was developing into an unhelpful exchange that was not productive. Two items were removed from the bill and a lot of food went to waste as a result. I cannot recommend this place at all. One of our group suggested it may have been a fluke because Spain were playing a World Cup match, and it was on the loud TV just feet away. However, enthusiasm and patriotism is no excuse for producing and providing bad or risky food to anyone. I could be harsher and say do not use this place if you have a palate, because it won’t benefit from the experience.
On a brighter note, if you like chips, then this is the place to go, but then only if you like them not quite hot enough .
