In the past when we went to this restaurant we had very good meals, particularly the prawns, soup, and sardines--they were superb.  This time we went and only the one of us who had a good meal was the one who ordered the prawns.  Two of us ordered crab--one the chili, one the curry--because we heard the crab is so good.  Well not so.  They don't serve the main body of the crab; only the legs and claws and for 150 rand the amount of crab meat you get is less than two tablespoons full.  Its unpleasant to eat because you have to pick out bits of shell among the meat and the utensil to split the shell--which you have to specifically request--is too big to do the job.  The vegetables they serve the crab with are the ones you don't eat at all--whole garlic cloves and lemongrass.  One of us ordered the steamed fish because the restaurant didn't have the other fish.  It came as a whole fish, head and tail (not an issue in itself) but not in any way deboned and the diner had to pick all the bones out, moreover it was extremely salty.  Rice and noodle portions intended for two people are what you'd get for one person at other Chinese restaurants.  It took a long time to get our food.  The restaurant was very hot; not even fans, so the air was heavy.  Service was inattentive and the owners don't even bother to ask you about your food or experience.  Good experiences in the past, but this last one was probably among the very worst restaurant experiences I've ever had.

Fisherman's Plate is not an elegant-looking place, but what they don't put into ambience and decor they put into value and flavour for the customer. There are rotating lazy susans on the tables and dishes come out as they're ready and the vibe is all about sharing dishes. The deep-fried calamari starter is a must. For mains do have steamed pak choi, deep-fried garlic prawns, black pepper beef, kung pow chicken (peri-peri warning here, don't have this if you don't like hot dishes) and the crab. The crabs are small but soft and full of meat and flavourful. They have a small wine selection but are cool with you bringing your own wine. The staff are unpretentious and friendly. Always a treat to go to Fisherman's. Arrive hungry and have a feast.
