Me and my husband visited Charleston for our 18th anniversary recently. Fortunately for us, our air-b&b was across the street from the downtown Five Loaves on Cannon St...in a word - AWESOME! We got in late on our first night, and the staff welcomed us very warmly, even though it was 15 minutes till closing. We continued to visit during the week that we stayed in Charleston. The staff made us 'their people'! Michelle, Bailey, Michael, Nick, Gabrielle, Melody, Maggie all took such great care of us - even waving, and calling us by name when we walked past during the afternoon. Lets not forget Don who made the awesome food. If you want good food and made to feel like part of the family, this is the place. Thanks Five Loaves Crew, Love ya lots, Adam and David
My friends and I found this place on Yelp during our trip to Charleston and was excited to try it out for Sunday brunch. When we got there, we were instructed to seat ourselves. About 10 minutes went by without anyone acknowledging us, so we politely asked for some menus. Once we got the menus, another 15 minutes went by without any staff coming by our table to help us. We again asked a passing waitress if we could place our order whenever they were ready, which she assured us the waiter would be by right away. Another 10 minutes passed, in which we noticed that the said waiter was taking orders of several other tables that had arrived after us. We asked yet again another staff member if we could place our order...same assurance that someone would be right with us and told with a smile. Then that same waitress turned around and blatantly took the order of the table behind us, that had literally just arrived. At this point, it was obvious that the staff did not want to serve us. The only reasoning for this from our perspective was that we were the only non-white patrons at the restaurant. This act of racism left a terrible taste in our mouths and we promptly left since it was clear they did not want our money and was merely wasting our time. I am astonished and sad to still have to worry about being served based on the color of my skin in the year 2019, but apparently here we are. Needless to say, I cannot review this restaurant on their actual food, but only by their treatment of non-white patrons because that is the only experience that I received here.
Would love to have reviewed the food but after sitting and waiting for 20min, we realized that every server was far more invested in taking the orders from all the white patrons around us, including all the tables that came after us. Asked 3 people to place an order, all 3 said yes and still walked away to take other orders and not ours.
