By far the worst dinning experience ever!  On Saturday night we went to the desert botanical gardens luminaria and made a 7 PM reservation at Gertrude's. Upon our arrival we were seated outside where when making the reservation we were told the only available seats were available outside on the patio. However there was several tables in the dining room open without anyone sitting at them. The patio was dark and when I asked the waiter if he would please light the candle on the table as I was having a hard time reading the menu his comment to me was "I'll light it I don't think it's going to help, however I will light it for the ambience. " I'd also like to mention that we have a teenager on the autistic spectrum with us who was clearly hungry, and was getting agitated from waiting so long for his dinner. We placed our order, and the appetizer came out pretty quickly. So we thought things would be OK. However we waited and waited for dinner to arrive. After sitting and waiting for 45 minutes, I asked the waiter if he would please check to see how much longer it would take. His comment to me was I don't know but your food is coming out soon. He then sent over one of the managers who said they were plating the scallops and it should be out soon.  It was another 15 mins before we were served! The manager did ask if she could get me a bowl of soup or anything. I said no I just want my main course and the hamburger that was ordered for my son. There was no offer to comp the appetizer or anything. We were also never made aware of any specials that they had that night. However I heard another waiter explaining the specials to the table next to us. My husband ordered wild boar with green chili, he thought it would be a piece of meat with green chiles it turned out to be a bowl of chili with wild boar in it for $25. I ordered the scallops that were under cooked , only 3 scallops on less than a teaspoon of for bidden rice and a sprinkling of micro greens for $37. On our way out I stopped by and asked for a manager. The manager that I spoke to was probably in her 20s, again did nothing to accommodate us and when I told her that we probably would never come back she said oh well I'm sorry to hear that and said thanks for letting me know. This experience was pretty bad for me to take the time to write a review, as I do not generally review places. Gertrudes is one of the worst restaurants I have been to since living in Phoenix.
This restaurant is located at the middle of the arboretum in Phoenix. What a fun place with lots of vegan options and meat sides for those meat eaters. The flavors of my Thai noodle bowl were spot on and just enough heat to make it interesting. Lighting outside was terrible for pictures so don't judge this place by the customer photo. My photo was so bad looking I refuse to post it! If you happen to be here at Christmas- get tickets to the luminaries event and reserve your table for dinner at Gertrudes. We ate outside and there were plenty of heaters to make December a perfect outdoor dinner venue.
I ordered Jambalaya!  It was good, as was my side salad.  I must say however I felt mislead by the Jambalaya description of the menu item..... the word LOBSTER jumped out at me, and I was expecting nicely sliced medallions of lobster within the other seafood and sausage...... and it turned out to be itty bitty langoustine lobster tails (why bother!).   When I brought it to the attention of the staff that I didn't see the "lobster", A young man with a scruffy unshaven face and greasy hair, gave me attitude and didn't handle my inquiry properly..... and as two other young waiters bumped into my chair neither one apologized, yet anybody who bumps into a chair knows (!) they've bumped into a chair, and they should apologize to the guest.  Nope not at this restaurant.  I also don't like restaurant staff member that donned a long hairy un-groomed beard. I don't want that anywhere near my food.  Management should really address this. The bar-tender that waited on me was great.  She was a professional. Gertrudes is a fine place and I highly recommend this restaurant.
