Well, we have lived on the north coast for 18 years and have just never taken that left off the King Salmon exit off the 101 to Gillis By the Bay. Our family's loss. Our experience was well worth the short trip off the highway. It was my birthday and frankly I wanted to try something different from where we usually go in Eureka/Fortuna/Arcata, etc. Besides, everything in the area seems to be closed on Sundays. We came to Gill's on a lovely Sunday afternoon for the northcoast (no fog, no wind, and relatively warm) and were seated at a nice table out on the spacious deck overlooking the bay and happy flowering garden space. The service was atentative. All that waited on us made sure that we were happy campers. The food rated pretty darn good in my opinion...We had the calamari appetizer which were nice meaty chunks fried in a fairly light batter served with both tarter and cocktail sauce with lemon slices. We all had cups of the seafood chowder -- piping hot and delish. Our group ordered the fish and chips, and calamari steak as entrées. Both were terrific. I chose the coleslaw as a side...a nice recipe...not too vinegary or sweet...just right. This birthday girl enjoyed a kicking spicy Bloody Mary adult beverage as well. I would say a visit to Gill's By The Bay is definitely worth the baby trip off the 101.
