I visited Haiku - as a keen enthusiast of Japanese culture and ways of being - for a midweek solo unwind in my neighbourhood. The bartender was very accommodating and pleasant, serving me my glass of red hassle free. Because I was so engrossed in my book, I let the time go by without being alerted of last drink windows or hydration offers (no water was offered - I’m not even talking complimentary because I exclusively drink sparkling water which is never free). I looked up and saw a waiter nearby to ask if they’re closing SOON and he handed me my ready-written bill. I hadn’t asked for it and had the closing time window been communicated prior, I would’ve simply acquiesced and requested my bill. I had intentions of ordering a dessert in addition to hydration, but no one came to me in over an hour. I respect closing times as much as the next person because staff needs to get home at decent times, but my issue is disrespect and disregard for patrons. Communicate that no more orders are being taken. Communicate that you’d like to write the bill. Communicate that I have 10 , 15, 20 minutes left. I’m a paying patron who would’ve actually tipped you if you had a morsel of regard for me as a black, solo patron. It’s not lost on me that these are all white waiters and I… a black woman. Shoddy service with no apology when I called it out (only from the scapegoat black bartender). Establishments like this thrive on the word-of-mouth of a disgruntled customer to tell their community “don’t go there, it’s racist” so that they maintain the false sanctity of being a predominantly white space. It’s easy - they don’t feel compelled to apologise because I could boycott and it’s one less “right of reservation” disturbed for them. What a way to leave a bad taste in the mouth of someone with a true appreciation for Asian cuisine and culture when it’s actually handled by those born into it, and not culture vultures merely pushing paper. Service: 1

I was there for an interview on the 21,01,22 and while I was waiting was a physically assaulted. None of the staff came toy aid, they all just stood there looking like it was a normal everyday accurence. A few days later I requested the video footage for my case and was rudely spoken to by both the owner and manager, they put the phone down on me, claiming nothing happened in their restaurant.. Yet I have the bruises to prove otherwise. If this is how they protect just someone coming to apply for work....How safe are you as a customer...
