I took take away so I can't comment on the service but the person taking my order was nice. Makis were OK, nothing special though.

Food selection is alright, I guess. But otherwise, there is nothing much to write home about flavour-wise.

I'm crushed. Hamachi-ya has been my favourite restaurant for 17+ years, and the food has always been excellent, authentic and great value, and kept me returning weekly through three relationships and many a celebration - even with a name/owner change in the early '00s. After recently moving away, I missed this place the most, but on a return visit, was my first stop. But with new ownership, for some reason, the menu has substantially changed and my heart and stomach were crushed. If you were a fan of the old Hamachi-ya, you will be gravely, deeply disappointed - I tried all my (ex)favourites, from the Temaki (don't do anymore), the nigiri (just average), tempura (nowhere as good as it was) gyoza (nothing special), salmon and rainbow rolls (average OK) and the signature dish, karaage donburi (which has simply been ruined). If you're a new customer, Hamachi-ya is not bad, it's just OK, just like many other similar Japanese restaurants. It was my 'six-star' restaurant, that has -
to me - fallen/changed so much from such heights, and that is the biggest tragedy. Truly saddened.
