The food and service were exceptional. A must try IMO.
Nice place and peaceful atmosphere. Service very good. Will be loving to visit this place again if they start providing less spicy option in thali. For me sambar and thali was spicy.
So I had an interesting experience at Indian House of Dosas the day after Thanksgiving last week with a group of 8 family members and I am a little conflicted about whether I should give four stars or three -- for a few reasons. First, the service was TERRIBLE. It looked like they were super understaffed and the manager was running around trying to keep everything afloat. I'm pretty sure he was cooking the food and taking orders. The guy that came out to give us the food had no idea what the order was or what he was handing us and didn't seem to care what it was either. There was no, "let me go check/ask", he'd just shrug his shoulders or look like a deer in the headlights. So there was very poor communication. They weren't even that busy -- there were maybe two other parties aside from us in the restaurant. They also brought out our food very sporadically -- they'd bring out one dosa and then we waited like 10 minutes for the next one to come out. It was awkward. The location is very convenient -- it was a good middle ground between Princeton, Edison, and Parsippany -- which is where all the members of my family were coming from. In terms of the ambiance, however, it was very quiet. The restaurant could have benefited from putting on some music in the background. Once we got talking it wasn't awkward anymore but at times it definitely felt awkward because of the lack of music. They actually started playing music conveniently right before we were leaving -- but the music really added a good quality to the experience. Luckily we were with great company so we could have been anywhere and it wouldn't have felt awkward. Now about the food. I was actually very impressed with the food. I think they didn't give enough sambar for sure and even when they brought out the appetizers, it was like all 8 of us had to share from the same tiny sambar which was weird. We got the idali, vada, and punugulu. All were pretty good. My mom was really hoping we'd get our food on the banana leaves -- but apparently they only have that on Sundays. My sister-in-law also originally ordered the sweet corn dosa and they said they didn't have it which made me wonder why it was on the menu (I'd understand if they ran out but it didn't seem as though that was the case). I really thought the utapam would be small because of the picture they had on the menu -- so we were thinking about getting more than one to sample the different flavors but I'm glad we only got one because it was HUGE. My cousin pointed out that it was the price of a full meal so it should be a decent quantity -- which he was right about. I was just thrown off by how big it was because the only kind I've had in the past have been small. But we got the chilli and onion one and it was really good. My only complaint about the food was that it was a little oily -- but very tasty. I was very happy with the consistency of the dosas -- they were not to crisp and not too soft. It was the perfect middle ground. They also gave the right amount of "masala" in the masala dosa (which most of us got). As mentioned before, we would have benefited from having more sambar but we asked them to give us more and they gave us more. I liked the sambar, personally. Some of my other family members thought it was average but I was very happy with it. The chutneys were also very good and the coconut chutney didn't have dairy in it so I was able to eat it! My boyfriend loved his onion and chilli masala dosa but my mom didn't love it as much. Everyone was very also happy with the South Indian coffee at the end of the meal -- and it was nice of them to give it complementary. I also want to say that I feel as though the prices were very fair and you definitely got your moneys worth. Presentation was also very good. I love the steel plates they served all the food on -- felt like we were at an Indian home. In an area where you can find a ton of good quality dosa -- I am not 100% sure these are great competition -- but in terms of the food -- my belly left happy. I would love to come back here -- and as I'm writing this review I'm already thinking about the next time I'll be back. I want to see how the service is when they are not so understaffed and if the manager wasn't juggling a million things (A for effort) if the food is less oily. For these reasons, I'll give Indian House of Dosas 4 stars. P.S. Hats off on the name! It was very fitting! It's IHOP with an upside down P.
