My wife and I decided to come to Kerbey Lane on Christmas Eve for brunch! Friendly service and the food was delicious! I got the Texas Benedict and my wife got the Migas! We also had a buttermilk pancake! Quality and Quantity is 5/5!
So I have to preface this by saying that I went to school here in the eighties and I come here every single time I come back to Austin. I'm really glad I waited to write this review. So back when I was in school, the gingerbread pancakes were the bomb. They were incredible. Delicious, moist... The kind of thing you couldn't stop thinking about for weeks after you came here. Okay that sounds a little obsessive. For good reason. But... The last several years when I have stopped in on visits to Austin, those have been very disappointing. I've tried them at several different locations and without fail, they are dry and taste like baking soda. I was pretty convinced that the restaurant had gone downhill. That would be incorrect. For whatever reason, the gingerbread pancakes just aren't good. They must have changed the recipe years ago. But absolutely everything else I've tried is. In fact, I would go as far as saying it s incredible. The service is always friendly and attentive. Even when they are very busy, the servers always take the time to be helpful and make good suggestions. The coffee is also excellent. I was pleased to note that they have local craft brew as well, although I didn't try it because I typically go there for breakfast. On this trip my obsession has been migas. If you order the Paris breakfast, you can pair them with pancakes or French toast. Or even the seasonal French toast for a fee. The first time I tried it with the pumpkin french toast. It was delicious but quite heavy and very very sweet. The second time I tried it with the pumpkin pancakes and that was perfection. I've tried all of their locations in Austin. by far the best one is the original one on Kerbey Lane. I don't know if it's that I have so many fun memories or I just like the funk. There can be a wait but it usually not that long. Highly recommend. If you come to Austin and need to do breakfast, this would be a can't miss!
Whenever I visit my sister / father in Austin, I always crave Kerbey Lane Cafe -- And for good reason; it is convenient, fast and is loaded with more options than you can shake a stick at, y'all (yee-haw!) Why only three stars? In truth, in my mind this place earns a solid 3.5-ish give or take +/- 0.2 on either side. While there are several vegan options here, I find them uninspired. Most notably in this negative light is the vegan "queso" which is essentially black beans and chili powder. This is 2019, man! Vegan-kind have long since dusted off the stereotype of eating nothing but beans and lettuce, but I digress... Their other dishes here are pretty good, I have no complaints but it's nothing to write home about. I say this with the utmost amount of love and respect, as I truly do respect traditionally non-vegan places that cater to vegans, especially in places like Texas where at times we may not be well received. So, really, thank you for existing and doing what you do! If I could make a suggestion, maybe look into new / different alternative meats and cheeses.
