El habanero first day open and we had a great meal! We will be back!! Has the mixtas fajitas with homemade corn tortillas-- big portion and so good!
The food was very good! Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu items. I hope they will add charro beans to the menu!
Like Chinese places, there's so many Mexican places that have almost an eerie similarity. Pick one and you almost know what to expect, right down to the placemats. La Michoacana is different. The name, when translated to english, means "La Michoacana" (an entertaining insight care of Google translate ). But this restaurant isn't just different because its name doesn't mean anything, it stands out to me because they offer not only some of the staples you would assume a Mexican place to have, but a vast array of what I'm guessing is honest-to-God ethnic Mexican food like abuela used to make.Choices of meat include beef tongue ("lengue"), tripe ("tripas") and if you're feeling adventurous the "Cabrito"--pork marinated in habanero sauce and accompanied on the menu by a mysterious asterisk which, I would assume meant it was hot if it wasn't already labeled as such with some clip-art of a flaming red pepper. Try a torta, the tamales...maybe a guarache and wash it down with some Horchata or even a beer. Try all of it because the priciest thing on the menu is only about 200 pesos ($10).One last tidbit to offer: The original La Michoacana is in, literally, what was once the living room of an old house down on High St near Pantops, but I'm pretty sure there is a brand new location across town near Forest Lakes/ Hollymeade. Gotta be the same place but, strangely, there is no mention of any one by the other when you're looking online. If you aren't into actually going to Granny's house (again, literally), try the new space.
