Ultra unpleasant waiter speaks to me in English while I speak to him in French. He called me a dick behind my back. I do not recommend. In addition, I got sick. Dreaming about a croissant and café here ever since we had the idea to visit Paris this fall, Le Café de la Nouvelle Mairie was as good as I remembered. Located around the corner from our hotel, steps from the Panthéon, this neighborhood hangout was just the spot to regroup after arriving at CDG yesterday morning. Although we remembered it as a morning coffee spot it remains open through the evening and serves lunch and dinner as well as a respectable selection of wines and other beverages if the spirit moves you. Sidewalk tables stretch along the tall street facing windows but be warned - it is Europe and patrons young and old smoke and vape to their hearts delight. We took our usual corner table by a closed window and enjoyed the view. Sold out of tartine beurre which is day old baguette toasted and buttered with that amazing stuff that we call butter in the US but as I noticed on the plane Is a cut above the American spread (think higher fat content) we "settled" for the finest croissants that I have experienced since the last time we were here 6 years ago. I knew as soon as they arrived and I smelled the butter wafting up from the slightly warmed symbol of French baking expertise on the table in front of us that this is what I had been waiting for. Hoping that I don't experience une crise cardiaque but pretty sure that I will be OK since my cardiologist just doubled the strength of my morning Lipitor dose I enjoyed my breakfast. The French coffee was not as bitter as my usual dose at home which makes me think that maybe I should rethink the beans that I source for our brew at home that flows from our Pavoni. How I wish I could bottle this scene. It is quiet with just un soupçon of classical music, singles and couples passing by ordering their morning drinks as they pass the small coffee bar at the entrance or responding to the barista's question of what they would like across the room as they seat themselves. My partner has left to search for something she has forgotten at the local parfumerie. Should I pass the morning here? Decisions, decisions, decisions....
