I had an incredible experience at Le Retro! It truly enhanced my stay in Bansko and left me longing to extend my visit. The location is superb, and the owner(s) went above and beyond to ensure a warm and helpful atmosphere, readily assisting with any inquiries. I will undoubtedly return to Le Retro on my next trip to Bansko. And don't even get me started on the breakfast—it's an absolute delight you won't want to miss! WARNING TO TRAVELERS: you may get by without a problem, but you may have the most terrible experience you have ever had traveling such as mine! I was yelled at, and my money was held until I demanded it by threatening police intervention. More details below. I arrived at the hostel on August 26th. That evening I had dinner and paid for the dinner and two nights in the dorm room with cash. I did not receive a receipt. On August 27th, I asked if a private room was available for two additional nights (the 28th and 29th) and was informed that they were. I paid then in cash for those two nights. Again, I did not receive a receipt. The next morning (August 28th) the owner told me that the private room was unavailable now for those two nights and then strangely asked me to pay for the first two nights that I had already paid. I explained I had already paid for the first two nights and I paid in advance for the next two nights as well. He did not recall any of this and started to be aggressive: raising his voice, calling me names (such as asking me if I was on drugs and telling me something was wrong with me and that he feels sorry for me that I’m sick in the head, saying that he is a millionaire and asking why he would need my money). This kind of treatment was extremely inhospitable (obviously). He said that he would call the cops and I told him that would be fine because he was scamming me and had my money. Once I said that he told me to pack my things and he would bring me the money. In the end, I received my money for the two nights that were supposed to be in the private room and left. However, I am extremely concerned for other individuals and especially solo female travelers as myself. I went to the municipality, the tourist office, and the police station. From individuals at these locations, including a friend of his I met through the digital nomad community there, I understand that this man may have some trouble with the courts in Bansko that’s tax related, and that he has done this treatment to other travelers. It is highly unacceptable, and I would hope that the protection agency has the authority to reprimand, review, or audit the owner to better understand why this type of management is able to remain a business and host tourists. BOTTOM LINE: don’t support this business and always get a receipt. Rooms: 4 Service: 1 Location: 4
