In January 2019 I had one of the very best dishes of STUFFED SOPAPILLAS I've ever had. One sopapilla was stuffed with red chile and the other with green. Both versions were EXCELLENT. Both were, of course, smothered. The red chile in particular was superb.....maybe the best I've ever eaten. Wonderful meal.
The original Los Mariachis restaurant on Motel Blvd is a roomy, clean, comfortable, full-service restaurant. It does seem a little dark inside but it is nice for casual dining, either lunch or dinner. The restaurant is divided up into three rooms; I prefer the front room which is more open and has more light.
When you enter you are greeted by a hostess and led to a table. The service here is pretty good but it can be a little spotty at times; depends on the waitress. Overall, rate the service as friendly and "fairly" efficient Some waitresses are better than others. One in particular....a little older than most....is a super good waitress. Wonderful woman. The menu at Los Mariachis is broad and essentially New Mex cuisine. They do offer beer. Prices are quite reasonable.
The food quality at Los Mariachis has been a little uneven over the years but the past few years the food has been very good. The chips are good as is the red salsa. I have had excellent rellenos here but my favorite meal is the CHILE CON CARNE STUFFED SOPAPILLAS....smothered of course. These stuffed sopapillas may be the best in town. I have tried their huge Hamburgesa Ranchera with its bacon and large green chile and found it to be very good. Their Fresnillo Sandwich is a chicken torta and it is generally very good. The GORDITAS FILLED WITH RED AND GREEN CHILE are among the best gorditas in town. Many places do not serve gorditas with chile. The chimichangas with either red or green chile are upper drawer.
What to expect if you go: A fairly comfortable place with a pleasant ambiance, generally good service but not always what it should be, and generally very good New Mex cuisine. Prices that are most reasonable.
MEXICAN FOOD RATING = FIFTH BEST IN THE AREA OVERALL.....top 10%....better than 90% of Mexican restaurants around Cruces. Some of their dishes are right at the top.
Restaurant rating = FOUR-AND-A-HALF STARS.....meaning, you'll have a very good dining experience.
Will I return to dine? Of course. I'm a regular.
