We chose to take friends to Matt's in the Market on Friday night because we wanted a premium dining experience with delicious food. While the wine, cocktails and food lived up to our expectations, the service we received from our waitress and then her manager was atrocious. We made reservations a little over a week prior to dining there and we were seated a bit before our scheduled reservation. Everything started off well and we ordered a few glasses of wine, a cocktail, a couple appetizers and eventually four entrees. My wife has Celiac and like many restaurants in Seattle, this restaurant does not offer gluten free bread or crackers. Because of this, my wife often takes gluten free crackers with her to eat with her salad and wine before the mains come out. Our waitress came by and saw this and abruptly said that they do not allow outside food or drinks which I generally understand. I asked if they had any gluten free bread or crackers available and the answer was no. I explained that my wife has an allergy to gluten and they were special for her. Now at this point, many of the restaurants that we dine at allow the few crackers that she brings in and understands that some people have unique dietary requirements.A few minutes later the manager came over to clear plates or something and we asked if they would allow my wife to eat her gluten free crackers at which point she snapped back and said it was illegal for any outside food or drinks. Illegal? Come on...it's not like we're bringing our own beers in and the restaurant isn't losing anything because they don't sell gluten free bread options. This whole experience placed a big damper on our evening and this well known restaurant ended up being a disappointment . We should have walked out at that point. We will not be returning to Matt's and we will encourage our friends to skip this place, too.
