This eatery - McGuire's Irish Pub - has been here since 1977 and, having seen it over the last two decades or so, it certainly occupies a large building on an oversized block.  I finally decided to go in to try it.  But, before doing so, I went in one day to take a look at the menu.  You can't help but driving by McGuire's because it's right on the route to and from the beach, where I-110 transitions from being a freeway to the roadway leading to the new Pensacola Bay Bridge. They had lunch specials.  Thus, I put it on the "to do list." I returned within a few days and had their shepherd's pie lunch special with a soft drink.  This place is dark inside.  I guess the inside of an Irish pub in the "old country" would be on the darker side.  The service was very proper, which was fine albeit unexpected.  I believe it depended on the server.  Some working nearby tables seemed to be more informal and folksier, in line with the "Redneck Riviera." As for the food, I was not wowed by my shepherd's pie.  It was good, but not memorable.  The "whip top," so to speak, was a little too much and the ingredients underneath it didn't come together in a way that would be synergistic, which is when shepherd's pie is really tasty.  Of all places, the best shepherd's pie I've ever eaten was at an Irish pub with late hours just north of cross-country I-70 in downtown Indianapolis.  I was wowed and the server seemed to know that the guests really liked this dish. I haven't had the opportunity to go return to that locale to eat their shepherd's pie again. McGuire's has all these different areas decked out in dark woods and with brass rails.  After finishing college, we'd call these places, albeit with more light, "fern barns."  However, McGuire's is far from being a "fern bar."  There is the entry foyer with the reception desk, an adjacent big and darker bar that is front and center, dining areas to both sides of it, and what seem like rooms for private events.   The kitsch is nonstop and follows the thematic goofiness of their double decker bus seen in their large parking lot when going to and from Pensacola Beach. The kitsch factor extends to the signage to the bathrooms which attempts to be humorous by cross-referencing restrooms for the other gender.  It also extends into the myriad of goofy things one could find in the gift shop and which I would not buy.  It's akin to the sort of stuff the "party on" crowd might pick up in NOLA, be it Mardi Gras or not.  I'll wrap up this review with 3 stars.
