I had an amazing time listening to Arvin Ahmadi talk about his new book DOWN AND ACROSS that launched this week at McNally Jackson. He and writer Adam Silvestri were a hilarious combo. Kudos to the host that put it all together she did a fabulous job. It was SRO! I’ll definitely attend more readings here - so warm & cozy compared to other bookstores.
Cute bookstore! They sell pens, cards, magazines, and they have a great selection of books and magazines... even books on art and design, which is great! There's a cafe inside as well, and I really like the overall atmosphere.
Long story short, if you've been to the Strand, you would be doing yourself a favor if you swung by McNally Jackson at some point as well. I like most book stores. To be fair, I think a person would be hard pressed not to be able to locate at least one work that they might have an affinity towards in really any bookstore of any kind (although that may take some searching depending on the establishment). With that being said, visiting a bookstore personally can be somewhat of a stressful exercise. There are so many great novels, histories, exposes, treaties, I can feel overwhelmed and wracked by decision fatigue. Is this book the one? Is it really speaking to me? Am I missing out? However, at McNally Jackson I didn't suffer the same pitfall. I don't know what it was, but I was attracted to so many books I wanted to read, that I thought I should get, that I would be comfortable bringing home. My thoughts were not centered on whether or not I would be really satisfied with my purchase, but on the fact that there was so much material, and seeming so little time to read. It was invigorating, inspiring in fact. I got two books, two more than I thought I needed, and there are still several left that I know I need to go back for! Maybe I got lucky, but I think the store has something about it. The organization, the layout, the literally vibes throughout the air. It is a wonderfully curated shop (spanning the popular and esoteric) and I think you'll find more than you bargained for, in the best of ways. Check it out.
