1/5 — Third visit, unfortunately our last. This review has also been updated following the owner’s public response. My first two visits to Merlion Thai were good, which is why I returned with a guest this time. However, this visit was drastically different. I ordered the Merlion Thai Peanut Sauce Curry with chicken and paid $3 EXTRA to ADD potatoes. Instead, I received a curry overwhelmingly dominated by large pieces of potato with very little chicken. I did not ask to substitute potatoes for chicken. The owner also points out that our party ate most of the other food ordered. What does the rest of my party’s food have to do with my specific dish or my feedback about it? Whether someone else finished their meal has no bearing on the chicken-to-potato ratio in my curry. I took over 90% of MY entrée home, which is why I included photos/video of the nearly full container. Yet the owner then responded, “I don’t know how much chicken you ate before boxing it up.” I already explained exactly that. I paid $3 to ADD potatoes, not to seemingly replace a reasonable portion of chicken. The photos/video allow readers to judge what I received for themselves. We also ordered four lobster dumplings for approximately $25. I acknowledge the owner’s clarification that the filling contains goat cheese, but I could barely detect lobster flavor or texture and did not find them worth the price. The beverage selection was also surprising. We did order club soda and ginger ale and were told bottled/canned non-alcoholic options weren’t available. The complimentary table water also had a very unpleasant tap-water taste, so I would not recommend it. The owner suggested confusion because I was viewing a menu on my phone. There was none. I was viewing Merlion’s OWN Toast ordering menu and showed it to our waitress. The owner claims the only Perrier on their menu is Joseph Perrier Champagne, yet the screenshot I’ve attached from Merlion’s Toast menu clearly lists Perrier ($4) AND S. Pellegrino ($4) under “NA Beverages.” If advertised items aren’t available, update the menu rather than suggesting the customer was confused. Service was disappointing as well. Our waitress Savannah came across as bothered/passive-aggressive when I made basic requests. The owner responded by itemizing our requests for lemons, limes, peanuts, chopsticks and Thai chilies, emphasizing the separate trips, then stating, “At some point there is only so much a waitress can do.” Are guests not allowed to make simple requests? I initially asked about a condiment/spice tray because that’s common in my experience at Thai restaurants. Once I learned they didn’t offer one, naturally I asked individually for what was available. My complaint was about the demeanor I experienced when asking—not whether the items were eventually brought. Portraying ordinary requests as burdensome only reinforces why I felt like an inconvenience. The owner’s “our staff are not mind readers” response regarding our special occasion also misses the point. I expected nothing complimentary and didn’t expect anyone to magically know. The server simply never asked whether we were celebrating anything, offered dessert, or asked if we’d like to see a dessert menu. Those small touches are part of attentive hospitality, especially at an upscale establishment. No mind reading required—simply asking. Most disappointing is the accusatory and condescending tone of the owner’s response. A business doesn’t have to agree with criticism, but how management responds to a customer’s negative experience also speaks volumes. Between this experience and management’s response, I won’t be returning or recommending Merlion Thai. The owner’s response, Toast menu screenshot, and my food photos/video are here. Readers can draw their own conclusions. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Updated: Question, why didn’t you take pictures of the food after it was delivered to the table showing hardly any meat? Instead, you took a picture after you ate had it boxed up and got home. This way readers can see if that was the case and do not have to take only one person’s word for it. If you were dissatisfied (especially after saying you enjoyed 2 other past visits) why not ask for a manager to let us know that you had issues so we could fix anything that might have been wrong? Instead, you went home took some pictures and wrote and extremely long review without speaking to a single management person. Again, we measure every dish out and don’t replace additional veggies for meat. Yes, it might show on our online toast system, but had you clicked it, it would have shown out of stock. That's why we have physical menus for one to look at while dining in at the restaurant for most updated products. Looking at our online ordering menu while dining at the restaurant you should’ve been able to see we had tea, green tea, pama tea, passion fruit tea, hot tea, ginger ale, club soda, coke, sprite, diet coke, juices etc. As far as your water complaint you will have to speak with the City of Seabrook. Honestly, you had already stated in your original review you guys would probably not be coming back. But I did have a pleasant conversation with the person whom you dined with this morning, and he said everything was wonderful and he loved his food. So, there may be hope we will see you again or at least him. Have a nice day!Thank you for the review. You guys had eaten the majority of your meals at the restaurant. Normal to go containers for people who order food to go is a black 32 oz container. I am not sure how much of the meat you ate of the dish before boxing it up, but we portion out all of our meats per dish. You guys ordered lobster and goat cheese dumplings appetizer that has pineapple curry and avocado on top. This is one of the most popular appetizers and again portioned out. If you wanted more Lobster our normal lobster dish is $60.00 for a pound of lobster meat and $25.00 for an appetizer is standard. When speaking to Savannah she said that you guys were ordering from your phone and kept asking for things we do not have. Topo Chico which there is a nationwide shortage and haven't been able to get for almost 9 months and is not on our menu. The only Perrier we have on our menu is Joseph Perrier Cuvee Royale Brut Champagne, FR. We do not carry Perrier water nor have we in the last 15 years. Savannah then asked you if you wanted club soda and you guys asked what that was and she explained and you guys decided to go with regular water. Savannah still feeling confused at what menu you guys kept ordering from. Savannah brought lemon, limes, peanuts, chop sticks and Thai chiles in fish sauce all requested on separate trips. At some point there is only so much a waitress can do. You guys were a walk in and there was no mention of any special occasion, and our staff are not mind readers. Had you guys mentioned anything we would have of course decorated the table and given a free dessert. The restaurant has been in business for 36 years and has done so being consistent. We always encourage customers while they are dining to let us know if there are any issues and we can address them before you leave. We wish you the best.
