If you are a mushroom lover, this is a must.  They have a signature mushroom dish that is full of flavors and fun to eat.  In fact, I would go as far as ditching the touristy Mercado San Miguel and just come here for tapas hopping.  There are a couple other mesons that look like caves next door.  The anchovies and olives are superb too as well as the Ribera.  Only complaint is that I wish the glass pours were larger, but that just might be a "me" problem
My husband and I wanted to try out the delicious mushrooms that we read so many reviews on but when we are arrived the line was so long and it seemed as though it would take forever to get service. We decided to head downstairs to use the bathrooms and stumbled upon another room that had empty tables. The waiter sat us right away we didn't have to wait!!!! We ordered the mushrooms vegetarian style (not on menu but can be made upon request) anchovies, grilled peppers, calamari and a pitcher of sangria. The food came out so fast! We barely had to wait. The mushrooms were absolutely delicious! The peppers were good but not sure if I would order again and the calamari was good too but wish it had a dipping sauce. The food and experience was good but would have been a 5 star rating if the calamari had a good sauce and the peppers had some more seasoning.
Mesón del Champiñón may be along a tourist street in Madrid, but their namesake (chorizo stuffed mushrooms) are truly worth checking out, even if it's just for the mushrooms. As a lactose intolerant individual, I was happy to finally find one of my favorite tapas in Spain. The mushrooms are juicy, and the chorizo adds a salty and fatty taste with each bite. Be careful- the olive oil with garlic bits inside the mushrooms is scalding hot! The inside of the restaurant is cozy with mosaic writings, wooden furniture, and low ceilings. I came on an early weekday afternoon, and it was fairly bustling with both locals and tourists. Be sure to visit here, even for fifteen minutes, to try their mesón de champiñónes!
