Top notch steak upstairs. Great old (English) pub downstairs.
Founded in 1835 was the great city of Melbourne. Some two years later, Sir Charles Ebden, a profound citizen of Sydney, bought some land in Collins St for 136 pounds! Two years later, he sold the land in part to The Bank of Australia and the area became what we know now as Bank Place. Built on one of the lots of lands, was a two storey private home that is now the oldest building in Melbourne and today we know it as the Mitre Tavern. 

The Mitre Tavern is a magnificent and superb Tavern and Steakhouse and you can feel the history as soon as you walk in. Today the venue features a rustic bistro, an outside beer garden and the recently renovated Steakhouse upstairs. 

My friend and I arrived for our 7.30pm reservation at the Steakhouse and the place was packed! As you would hope for, the menus were given to us immediately as we sat down at our table on delightful, comfortable couches. 

For my entrée, I ordered the tamarind and lemongrass BBQ Starter Ribs and they were absolutely delicious! Extremely succulent meat and a great start to the night.

For our main course, we ordered the 450g Rib Eye and the 200g Eye Fillet both cooked medium-rare. The steaks came cooked as ordered and with our choices of sauces being the Creamy Mushroom sauce and the Port Jus sauce. The steaks also came with Hot English mustard and yep it was hot!! The steaks do come charred on the outside so if you don’t like that you may need to mention it. To me, it only adds to the flavour.

For sides, we had the truffle chips and a garden salad. The garden salad came with a very tasty dressing, it was fresh, crisp and vibrant and the chips were golden and crunchy. The truffle chips were incredible! Best chips ever. Steak, chips and salad – all perfect - what more can you ask for?

For drinks, we had Brick Kiln which was a Shiraz and it went beautifully with the steaks.

I chose the chocolate fondant for dessert and it came exactly how a fondant is meant to be, with the chocolate oozing out from the middle. It was warm, delectable and exquisite! The ice cream went with it perfectly and took away some of the sweetness. We also had the Sticky Date! Delightful.

Overall, the food, drinks, surroundings and ambience was all most pleasing and is definitely something I would want to experience again. The customer service was absolutely exceptional. All the waiters and waitresses that served was very friendly, attentive and made the whole experience so much more enjoyable.

The Mitre Tavern along with all its history is a great venue. If you want fine dining upstairs in the Steakhouse, casual dining in the Bistro Tavern or want to enjoy an amazing atmosphere and delicious food in the largest beer garden in the CBD, it is all here for you at the Mitre Tavern.
