Alright, background on me first... I love sushi. Okay, done. Just kidding, of course! I eat sushi about once a week, if not more. I've had my fair share of the fishy goodness all over the world, and while Japan obviously has the best (a little aside here: don't order raw fish on a whim at a slightly sketchy restaurant in Lima, Peru... I did it. It did not end well), there are places around these parts that don't do it so poorly. Regarding Mr. Tokyo, I have eaten here at least ten times. Let's start with the sashimi: fresh? Yes. Favorites: yellow tail and salmon. Rolls: average. For American style and standards, they aren't bad; could do without all the extra sauces though. Variety: pretty far-ranging smorgasbord here of Asian cuisine. The miso soup tastes slightly off, but not terrible. Fried tofu is always a favorite of mine. Tempura veggies stand up to the name, but the sauce with it could be upgraded a bit (some Ponzu perhaps?). Price: this really depends on what you order. If you want to indulge on many different things, go with the all-you-can eat; you won't be that disappointed. Also, it's roughly $20, which is more affordable than most places around charging $10-$12 per roll. If you want to buy just one or two rolls, then it's comparable with other places. Service: Overall, really not bad. Sometimes when it's very busy, the service can be attentive, but typically, it's better than most restaurants because the place isn't huge and it's well-staffed. One caveat: let's say you order one or two rolls too much... You can expect to pay a little extra if you leave pieces of sushi or take it home, since the all-you-can eat isn't meant to be a takeaway thing. Final conclusion: I don't think you will be upset with this restaurant. If you're looking for the highest quality fish in Charlotte, there are places uptown that offer it; but, you're looking at much, much higher prices on par with what you would find in New York, London and the likes. If you want a place that's of good quality and taste with a good selection on tap, then you will be pleased here. Hope you enjoy it!
Cleanliness was extremely poor. We wanted a booth which they had plenty of empty tables but every single one was dirty. We asked the hostess if we could move and she said she would clean one for us but never came back. Our server then told us we could move and proceeded to put OUR drinks down on a dirty table while he took the dirty dishes off (gross!). Food all over the floor and on my seat which I had to wipe off with my hand. I dont know if they were just understaffed or what but it seemed like the server was very overwhelmed. I felt bad for him. Soy sauce on the table was empty, of course. The food was the only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1. Probably what is keeping them afloat. Poor management is clearly to blame here. I will definitely NEVER be back to this location!
They charged $20 for all you can eat sushi for an 11yr old. Then took 20 minutes to get us a 6 piece California roll that would have cost $5 on the menu. They bring the rolls super slow. So you have to order them all up front, but here's the catch, they charge you $1 /piece that you don't eat. Takes the fun out of going out to eat. I would have only given them one star, but our waiter was very sweet. Seemed he was just carrying out the company policy.
