Let's talk about strategy here - I came here on Saturday afternoon around 4 and was told that the wait would be 2.5 hours. Well, that was fine since we planned to explore the neighborhood. You put your name and phone number down and get a call when your table is ready. BUT when we came back at 6:30, the hostess was telling people the wait was FOUR HOURS! Holy moly, this place is hopping. Inside is cozy, and we sat at the bar. We started out with the Johnny Cakes, which was sooo good. For those not from the area, this is a pancake that has been rendered sticky with honey butter, but it is topped with smoked bluefish and caviar. The kitchen miraculously also preserved the fluffiness of the pancake, too. So you get this satisfying salty, sweet, sticky and carb-y bite with every forkful. It's really scrumptious and I would order this again in a heartbeat. I was feeling under the weather so I ordered the Cioppino, which had a fantastic kick that it actually made me cough with the first mouthful. It is bountiful with mussels, clams, swordfish, salmon and shrimp. You get both rice in the soup as well as bread on the side. Quite a satisfying meal on a chilly Fall evening and a true delight for seafood lovers. The wine here is good and the service really fantastic. Definitely recommend adding this to your bucket list for a Boston trip!
TIP: Go to the restaurant as early as possible to put your name down on the waitlist since it will be at least a 3-5 hour wait. My friends and I put our names down around 1-2 pm on a Sunday (holiday) weekend and were told it would be a 5-hour wait. Thankfully, we did not have to wait around so we just came back to North End once we received a call from Neptune. After waiting in the tight entrance space, my party was seated in the back of this cozy venue. We all had a sampling of several oysters - It was great to select from a wide array of oysters sourced from many locations and that Neptune provided a flavor description for each type of oyster. (Will re-edit this post to add the name of my favorite type - had a cucumber and melon taste). We ordered some clam chowder, a couple of hot lobster rolls (extra butter on the side) and the N.O.B. clambake. Everything was delicious, but of course, the real winner was the lobster roll. The clam chowder has a thin consistency and includes such large and FRESH clams. The N.O.B clambake was perfect for sharing and had a great savory flavor because of the tomatoes and chorizo pieces. You have to work a little bit to get the meat out of the lobster. The lobster roll on its own is amazing and stuffed with meat, but when you add a bit of the warm butter - the taste is even more magical. While Neptune's Oyster is a bit on the pricey side with an insane wait, it is a great seafood experience!
Delicious! We went in at around 11 am on a Wednesday morning and the wait was already 20-30 minutes. We ordered the hot lobster rolls, which were really good but tasted almost too much like butter. The real gem though were the oysters, much much better than the lobster rolls. Each are around $3.50, but they are delicious and the wait is worth it for the oysters alone. The place is verryyyyy tiny though, so it does feel a little cramped in there.
