I've been a couple of times now and both Vegan "meals" were excellent.  I placed meals in quotes because they actually have several Vegan meals to choose from on the menu!   No guessing games with a waiter or adjusting an item.  JD made my drinks on the first trek and they were excellent.  He wasn't there the second trek and they were just okay.  It gets crowded in the evenings so the wait can be long but worth it!
I have been wanting to go here sooo long since I heard they have really great drinks. We showed up hungry at 9 PM on a Friday night and it was packed and super loud.  We were expecting the worst service and mediocre food...but we were BLOWN away by how amazing everything was.  The staff were so quick so friendly.  The waiter didn't put in our order in time (which was fine because it came out just as quick) so he gave us a free round of drinks.  The music is fun! def not a place to go to if you want to talk but the FOOD IS INCREDIBLE and drinks are amazing!  I found my new favorite spot.
My daughter (with special needs) and I were made to feel very unwelcome at Palmilla Cocina y Tequila We visited Sunday, April 14, 2019, at around 5PM. Mindy has Angelman Syndrome. I hadn't taken her to the pier for a year or two  She was very confused over the transformation from our favorite café into this expanded restaurant; Palmilla Cocina y Tequila. However, she expected to be seated as usual. She is incapable of processing the fact that this is not the same café. Her confusion caused her to stand outside the fence of the patio seating area. She would not budge. This created a stressful situation for both of us. I have learned to simply give her plenty of time to adjust to confusing situations. During this time of uncertainty and stress, we were treated rudely by staff; two separate times. The first time I blew-off as just poor staff training and other potential factors. The second time was by two big guys who looked like they were bouncers, but they were likely servers. One approached us outside of the fence and stood near me. He made it clear that Mindy was not welcome to stand there. I asked if we could be seated in the patio. Most of the patio area was vacant, so I didn't expect it to be a problem. The guy standing nearest me said he "would try". But it was obvious he wanted us to just move on. He took no action to make us feel welcome, or seat us. The second guy was inside the fence and stated that I should move her to the public "bench". He pointed to one fifteen feet away. At this point I got the message we were unwelcome, and I hoped Mindy would get the message too. But Mindy does not know what hate is. She has none. She only knows love, and frustration. Mindy is thirty-four years old but looks about twelve. Her intellectual capability is around two. Her condition is such that she giggles and smiles when she is happy, nervous, or confused. Some people may be uncomfortable around her, but it is rare that they express hate. Mostly, I am impressed by the support we receive from random people. Many people fall in love with her spirit. We have visited many pier establishments since she was a small child. Businesses have come and gone. We have always felt very welcome wherever we go. In fact, many owners and servers have made sure we knew that our business is appreciated.  Fellow patrons are mostly understanding and supportive as well. We make it a point to ensure that Mindy enjoys life, and take her most places that we go. I remember my childhood in the late 60s and 70's when families hid their special needs children inside the dark house. I will not have that for Mindy. She has shared all kinds of adventures with us. We try to keep it to places and activities she is comfortable with. She has sailed the ocean on our boats, and flown in our Cessna airplane over California. She has visited national parks, and takes short walks in nature. She has lived a great life. I can't remember the last time we have been treated poorly at any business. We occasionally get dirty looks on the street, but never by restaurant staff. I understand that people have their own perception of reality. I understand that Mindy's quirks can make people feel uncomfortable. Friends I have consulted with about this particular incident are angry that Mindy was treated this way. I try not to hold anger. However, I will never feel the need to support this restaurant. There are plenty of other great places to eat and drink at the pier. I will happily support those; and so will my friends and family.
