My wife and I visited Dallas for a long weekend and this was our first stop upon arriving in town. We heard about the long wait so standing in line did not come as a surprise. Luckily it was a relatively nice day - not terribly hot and no rain. After about 1.5 hours, we made it to the counter. I found it a bit bizarre that there was only one cashier in the main line and then one cashier in the express line. I feel this could have been a more efficient process with a second or third cashier. I understand then that not as many tables would be available, but I'm guessing some folks would take to-go and find a spot to enjoy their meal in the neighborhood. I ordered the brisket with a side of mac and cheese and cole slaw. My wife had the pulled pork. The brisket had a nice smoky flavor to it, but was a bit drier than I prefer. Still, it was top five in my mind. The pulled pork was a bit fatty, but had a nice flavor to it. It was not saturated with sauce, which was a huge plus. The sides were solid complements to the overall meal. Overall, 4 stars for the quality of food and living up to the hype. Improve the efficiency of ordering and this turns into a 5.
Best ribs I've ever had. The fried ones were amazing and the smoked ones were just as good. The brisket is bomb, I thought the Mac and cheese was good but kinda basic, next time I'll probably go with another side. Overall 10/10 for sure. Go early! Got there at 1030 in a Thursday and was 3 in line!
Pecan Lodge is a Dallas staple, and it is arguably my first "go-to" restaurant when people come to visit. You think Texas, you think barbecue. And in my mind, when I think barbecue, I think Pecan Lodge. Located in Deep Ellum, Pecan Lodge is always bustling with activity. If you plan on eating here, go early! Lines are often down the block, and after a certain point, you're going to be eating what they happen to have left. Trust me, beat the rush. If you're going with a larger group, one trick is that they have an express line for those ordering greater than 5 pounds of meat. One inside, the menu is simple but complete. If you're in a group, I recommend the trough, which has a bit of everything. If by yourself, get a plate. I usually get the brisket and the pulled pork. Let's talk about that brisket. It is absolutely melt in your mouth. Just imagining it makes me hungry. You can't go wrong with any of the meats here. They're always fresh, hearty, and the portion sizes are large enough to satisfy even the must intense hunger. The sides are fantastic here as well. I usually go for the fried okra and/or mac and cheese. Both are southern classics. The interior is rustic, and they utilize the space well. There is usually a small wait to get seated, but they try their best to keep people moving along and to stop people claiming a seat while their party waits in line. This keeps the seating limited to people actually eating. Overall, I would 100% recommend Pecan Lodge. It is a must if you're in Dallas, or even just visiting.
