If you are a hipster and you like trying different and new places that will cater to your allergies or dietary choices, this is the place for you! It is a cute spot on the not so busy part of the eccentric Elmwood Village. It is Vegan, not gluten free, but you do have the option of adjusting your meal to GF if the menu specifies you can do that for that specific item. I got the Bodhi, which is a quinoa and white bean burger topped with apple chutney on a bun (I chose the GF  option). It also comes with sweet potato fries and two sauces: a sweet butter and maple mustard. My body feels great and I am full as everything was good...separately. The chutney did not go well with the bread or pattie; the pattie could've used a little fat; the sauces were good but they didn't quite go with the pattie either since the "burger" comes with plain mayo. The pattie was very heavily seasoned and overpowered the other flavors. There was a lot to work with and they just weren't working together. And then there's the price. Even if the menu offers GF, expect a $3 upcharge for GF, on top of an already pricey menu item. And ask questions! This was my first experience and I almost left with a substitution I didn't ask for because I ordered GF. Had I not opened the box before I left, I would not have known since the waitress didn't inform me. Also the menu should state that there's a charge to change to GF.
So, I'm v new to the vegetarian game. I'm not all in, but i figure i should begin trying restaurants such as Root and Bloom to have an easier transition. What a quaint restaurant! The seating is slim, so do not go during their busy time. Such beautiful earthy tones, hipsters would thrive here. I started with Jackfruit BBQ wings. For those of that don't know, jackfruit has the most repulsive smell you could ever come across. It could gag a maggot. Root and Bloom somehow figured out how to turn a repulsive smelling fruit, into the most delectable wings. These were better than normal wings, and that's saying a lot. The consistency mimicked meat, the perfect "boneless" wing. I also ordered the Felix... uhm i am not sure what i was expecting.. but it wasn't quite to my liking. There was no  taste, the ricotta was great though. My friend had ordered the Fernando which was bang. I wish i ordered that, so next time, absolutely. In the  Fernando, you didn't realize there was no meat or the fact that they were "fake" eggs, it was pretty amazing. I heard their shakes were also A1 so just one more reason i will go back. Try something new and get your but to Root and Bloom!
Finally made it to Root & Bloom, like many I was attracted to the aesthetics of the cafe but after having spent a solid 3 hours on a gloomy Monday afternoon I can be sure to say that I enjoyed my lunch and coffee more than the vibe! Food 4.5/5 - I tried the Bodhi burger that was very tasty, the vegetable, quinoa patty was delicious and paired very well with the sweet potato fries and maple mustard. My husband had the Lou Lou salad and he finished the entire bowl in 10 minutes, clearly he enjoyed the salad. Drink 4/5 - The latte tasted really creamy given it was made with cashew milk, my first time trying something so heavy. The coffee was expensive but the refills are free but hey they serve my favorite Tipico Coffee. Service 5/5 - the food was out in 12-15 minutes and the lady behind the counter was very pleasant to chat with. I took a star as the bar stools were not tall enough, it was rather difficult for a 5ft5" tall person to eat at the bar.
