As a former China expatriate couple who lived in Hong Kong for nearly a decade, we have high standards when it comes to Chinese food. We regularly visit Royal China Restaurant in Dallas not because it achieves those standards, but because it is the nearest acceptable venue to where we live that comes anywhere remotely close. The Xiao Long Bao and dumplings in particular are good enough. We also appreciate that the dishes in general are not over-sweet, which is all too common in American-Chinese restaurants on the whole. As for the main dishes, they are likewise not bad, yet not outstanding. Especially compared to several more genuine venues in Irving and Richardson. The service at Royal China Restaurant is always very friendly and attentive. The environment is also always very clean and well-maintained. Prices are fair enough for the food, but we would certainly appreciate several more reasonable wine options to match. While it may not reign supreme in the Metroplex and certainly isn't going be given a James Beard award anytime soon, Royal China is certainly worth a visit if you're nearby and looking for friendly service, decent dumplings, and a clean atmosphere. We would recommend it to others in the immediate area, at least with the aforementioned caveats.
