Food is just aite and a bit expensive, a lot of expats here.
Arriving 5 minutes before opening (5pm) we got lucky and scored a table for two without a reservation! We were asked to leave by 8:00pm for another party, which was far more than enough time. The service staff were wonderfully present and helpful but didn’t crowd us at all. They answered a couple questions and added to the experience. The food was very fresh tasting, delicious in its complexity of flavours even though the ingredients, overall, were seemingly simple. One of my favourite dishes of the entire trip was the fried banana blossoms. Would happily return again if there weren’t so many other places to check out on this adventure!
I always do extensive restaurant research before traveling to a new city, so I was especially excited to try Soul Food Mahanakorn during my trip to Bangkok. I went on a Thursday night, and arrived early. There was only one table seated, but the rest were reserved, so I'd highly recommend making a reservation if you're interested in trying it. I was dining solo so I was perfectly happy to take a seat at the bar, which was offered. I started with the Mieng Kham and subbed tofu for the pork jowl, as I don't eat meat. This ended up being the best part of my meal, but the plate itself is quite simple. You're given disassembled lettuce wraps (butterhead lettuce cups, limes, chilis, fried garlic, peanuts, toasted coconut, and tamarind jam) and build your own. The tamarind jam was the standout on the plate, I could've eaten it by itself with a spoon--very good. The rest was just...a lettuce wrap. The ingredients were simple and fresh but there was no real culinary prowess exhibited aside from the jam. The plate is also small and crowded, so a lot of little crumbs ended up on my lap. For my main I did the softshell crab pad thai. They describe the crab as lightly fried, but all I could taste was the oily breading. Perhaps they needed to swap the oil in their fryer. It was quite overpowering and I didn't finish it. The presentation was pretty (the noodles come wrapped like a present in a thin, fried egg casing) but the flavor was 3/5 stars. They also give you whole, long pieces of green onion on the side, which makes for a pretty presentation but I really hate impractical garnishes as I had to try to cut them with my bread knife or tear them with my hands or teeth. Cocktails were quite pricey so I didn't drink. Had a fresh lime soda which was quite refreshing but maybe just a tad too tart. The best part of dinner was the music they played--lots of funk and soul which made me feel like I was back in the American South. Service was friendly, but expect to flag someone down if you need anything or have questions (although that's pretty standard for the region.) They also never asked how I enjoyed my meal, even though most of it was left on my plate so clearly there were issues. Overall: ambiance is cool, music is killer, food is adequate but not worth over $30 USD when you can get something just as authentic and probably more tasty at a street food stall.
