Enjoy Glad Tidings Church and come to this restaurant. Spanish cuisine is recommended to taste at State Bird Provisions. To try nicely cooked olive sandwiches, trout and belly pork is a really good idea. Tasty coconut ice cream, sourdough pancakes and buckwheat pancakes are the best dishes. A number of reviewers have noticed that you can have delicious wine, beer or cider at this place. Visit this place and order great hot chocolate, ice tea or americano.

State Bird is a place where I believe the difficulty in getting a reservation is actually justified. Which is to as early as possible (ideally when reservations are just released ~30 days in advance), or be prepared to wait 1-2 hours when walking in. State Bird is on my list of top restaurants in SF and one of the most unique menus in SF. This is a place you could visit again and again, and not be tired of the options. It's dim-sum style, which naturally leads to the question: "is it Asian food?" to which the answer is "there are some Asian flavors and techniques, but it's innovative, seasonal, blend of culture of flavors - essentially, the best of California's reputations." I've been here over 4 times and each time have been delighted by the various new small plates, and the seasonal ingredients featured on the spins of the plates you can order a la carte. Tip: the more you want to try, the more I'd recommend sticking to the small plates and then ordering dessert. For dietary restrictions: very doable for gluten free/gluten sensitive. Ok for vegetarians (albeit a lot more limited as some of the best menu items feature animal proteins), but not recommended for vegans. Comments on some staples: - mochi (a la carte menu): good main course option for vegetarians, and flavors vary depending on the vegetables in season - The well-known State Bird (a la carte menu) is essentially an elevated version of fried chicken (in this case, quail) with some onion flavor. Great thing is there's a gluten free version! - pork belly with kim chi (small plate, dim sum style): perfectly crispy with bright acidity. highly recommend! - various vegetables (small plate, dim sum style): these veggies may look simple, but are some of my favorite things I've tried at State Bird, such as the tomatoes (I can't even characterize what the sauce accompanying it was, but it was divine) or the sunchoke - garlic bread with burrata (small plate, dim sum style): like savory fried dough that's so satisfying but thankfully not a huge portion
Overall was more disappointed than delighted. Maybe we came on an off night (Monday) because even the tables next to us seemed underwhelmed by the food. We also sat at a table where it felt like we were always getting the tail end of the carts. Service was good and we were immediately seated for a 5:30PM reservation. We were confused on how to order drinks and main dishes though, and it was a while before we got the attention of our server again. It seemed like you could order drinks through any server, but we just waited for our original server to avoid any confusion. Most of the food was bland or one note, very forgettable. The only dishes I can recommend that were 1 Michelin star worthy: - guinea hen dumpling with aromatic (flavor!) broth - spicy crab with kimchee (crab gets washed out, but it's a unique dish) - eggnog ice cream sandwich
I felt like I was the last person on earth, at least amongst my friends, to eat at State Bird Provisions but I'm so happy I finally made it!  We had a late reservations on a weekend night and when we showed up it seemed like quite a few others did as well. As many know SBP serves their dishes in a manner that reminds me of dim sum or tapas.  Servers stop by tables offering assorted dishes, sometimes on a tray and sometimes in a rolling cart.  If the dishes are outside of the normal price range, they will offer up that information.  All dishes served that night are on a menu, as are an assortment of larger dishes that can be ordered from a menu.  Once a dish is ordered or selected, the server marks up the card placed on your table to keep tabs. We opted to try almost every item they were serving that night and even though we were sharing dishes all of us were very full.  My favorites were the farm green ohitashi with ponzu and cashew crema, duck liver mousse with almond biscuits, garlic bread with burrata (definitely get THIS) and smoked sunchokes.  The only dish I probably wouldn't order again is the pork ribs.  While the flavor was good, I found the ribs to be on the dry side and not anything that stood out as much as the other dishes.   Overall I enjoyed the innovative combinations of such fresh ingredients. For dessert we split the very light strawberry guava lilikoi granita with rosemary tapioca and kiwi.   Throughout the meal I sipped on a couple of glasses of the Cappelletti Spritz, a light refreshing low-alcohol beverage.   Service was spot on, warm and friendly.  We felt very welcome.  Yes, we lingered until we were one of the last tables left but never felt rushed to leave.   Parking is available on the street or in the Japantown garage nearby.   Come for great food and a fun time!  I would love to sit at the bar on my next visit to see how it's all made.
