We enjoyed the atmosphere and service. We made Reservations online over a month ago so we didn't have to wait 1.5 hour. Food was unique and alright but portions were quite small. This is a fun place for hipsters and date nights, not so much for families.
State Bird... a restaurant with unique personality! One thing that need to be improved is: Our server seemed to ignore us, maybe he assumed we just can ordered the dimsum food.. but we came here to order from the menu! After he asked about the drink... he did not come back to our table for quite a long time... and yes, we finally had to order from the food that other servers brought in a tray (dimsum) because we were very hungry!!! I would say the must order food here is the "CA state bird with provisions" $16/$32. It is very delicious! Crispy skin, the meat is tender and juicy. We were glad that we also ordered "Spicy Dungeness Crab with kimchi yuba stir-fry & smoked egg bottarga" $30. This dish is very unique, modern and creative way to combine kimchi, crabs and eggs. Seemed like most of the dimsum dish are better than the dish from the menu. The "Poppyseed Buckwheat-Beef Tongue Pastrami Pancakes" were not my favorite, taste more the wheat bread than anything else. The "Steak Tartare Toast" is not that great either. Whatever "over the toast" dish are not that impressive. For the dessert, we ordered Eureka Lemon Granite which taste very refreshing. The restaurant is well known for their "World Peace" Peanut Muscovado Milk, which is very addicting! The ambiance is quite fun, modern decor. The restroom seems more like a backyard with two chairs where you can have guests coming over :)
I was a little nervous that the food would not live up to the hype and boy was I relieved to be wrong. An amazing experience from beginning to end!  Even though this is a Michelin starred restaurant it is not stuffy or pretentious. Staff is very friendly and happy to explain any dish. We loved being able to see and discuss each dish before ordering and trying lots of things rather than going all in on one dish. This let us try everything from hen dumplings (savory and full of umami) to spring rolls with pistachio (sweet and a little spicy and bright), pork belly (rich and melt in your mouth), garlic bread with burrata (overpriced but delicious), broccolini (herbaceous and bitterness balances with sweeter citrusy sauce) and artichoke bread (my favorite). There were about a dozen options rotating around and we tried at least half plus one or two items on the menu and there wasn't one thing we didn't like. Absolutely bold seasoning and flavor with great balances of salt, umami, acid, spice etc. there was always a surprise note in each bite. The portion sizes were perfect to allow two people to try everything.   Worth the struggle for a reservation!
