The Freakin Rican restaurant in New York City is a great place to go for a taste of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. The service is great, and the staff is friendly and attentive. The food is flavorful and the portions are generous. The pernil is cooked perfectly, with a nice crispy skin, and the mofongo is moist and full of flavor. The pasteles are especially good, and don't need any ketchup or extra seasoning. The arroz con gandules is done right and is just like grandma used to make. The desserts are also delicious, especially the tres leches. You can even buy frozen pasteles to take home. Overall, The Freakin Rican is a great spot for a delicious and authentic Puerto Rican meal. Highly recommended!

The Freakin Rican is a constant disappointment. Today, my last time eating from here, it was their sancocho. Two of the four pieces of meat were large chunks of fat with no meat and all the vegetables, including the corn, tastes like they were going bad. Cutting costs by throwing rotting vegetables in a soup and serving it to people is unacceptable! I don’t know how they boast winning awards or being the best when their food is subpar. I’m not Puerto Rican but the dishes I make tastes better than theirs and it won’t poison you because I don’t cook rotting vegetables. Their service is trash too. I was there on the same day as the Puerto Rican day parade a couple of years ago and waited 45 minutes for a table (even though they had available tables) because they were taking reservations on the phone and ignoring the people standing outside their restaurant. This place is absolute trash. UPDATE: See Freakin Rican’s response below in which they claim I was having a bad day and that’s why there were rotting vegetables in their sancocho. I assure you it wasn’t a bad day until AFTER I had your nasty soup. Your review is not a good look, pendejo. The only reason why I wrote a review is because your food made me sick. Instead of being a jerk you should be more apologetic and much more careful. Service: Take out Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $10–20 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Hope you told your server and they replaced it or credited you. I can assure you we would never cut cost by adding anything that is going bad to our food. We take our quality control very serious. Truly sorry you seem like you just had a very bad day, hope things are looking better for you. Thank you!More

BAIT AND SWITCH!
I spent a total of $299.34. Part of my order contained 24 pork pasteles. The meat filling was undercooked, rubbery, inedible salt pork fat. No ham...no pernil.
I emailed Derick and corresponded with Dayana Disla (Executive Assistance). I sent her 8 pictures of dissected pasteles which clearly shows the piles of pure rubbery fat. Her excuse was... "Yes, sometimes the staff is in production mode and may overlook a couple with less meat." She went on to say she will not provide a refund.
I was baited by the savory pork filled pasteles that Derick prepares on his youtube channel and it is clearly not what I received. Derick needs to implement quality control in his establishment. I live in California and I did not mind paying the $123 just on shipping cost because I trusted Derick would send an outstanding product like what he advertises.
I will never purchase again, and I will inform other's of my terrible experience. Please see attached photos.

Had dinner with my sisters today. The food was very good. Paulina the hostess/waitress was simply a doll. Very friendly staff. The place has a nice ambiance with the sounds of the coqui, and he plays salsa and merengue music. I will come back for seconds.
