This was my favorite meal during our trip to the Boston area. The old school, eclectic decorating style of this place is really cool. There's a lot to take in. Our server Claudia was knowledgeable about the menu, had great recommendations, and was very attentive to our table. I got a seasonal special, which was a breakfast sandwich with barbacoa steak. It was huge and very tasty.  A generous helping of home fries.  Wish I could have eaten more.  We also got their doughnuts with the cheesecake icing and strawberry sriracha sauce. So tasty and a unique spin on the sweet vs. spicy pairing.
Goodish Sunday brunch (can have long line) I really have mixed feelings about this place. Our family of four was staying in Kendell Square and we wanted lunch. Unfortunately, it turns out you only get two choices on a Sunday - closed or Brunch (the worst meal of the week). Making the best of a bad business we headed to what seemed to be the place people liked best - The Friendly Toast. I was very disappointed in their Eggs Benedict offerings. I LOVE Eggs Benedict and I'm happy with either side of the Canadian/American bacon debate but also like lox or spinach. But even though they offer 5 different 'Bennys' they were all 'off' - Virginia Ham (too salty), Pork Belly (too fatty), Corned Beef (?), Barbacoa (?!?), and Lobster (which I just wasn't willing to gamble on). So instead I cobbled together a normal-ish breakfast - two eggs sunnyside up with sides of grits, bacon and biscuit. The grits were spectacular. But the eggs were overcooked, the bacon undercooked, and the biscuit was just OK. My wife had it worse. She got Sally's BLT which was by far the worst BLT (and Fried Green Tomato) she has ever ordered. The tomato was hard, dry, and mealy (frozen?) and the bacon limp and greasy. So it was left mostly uneaten. On the other hand, our kids liked their Freak Out Greek Out and Taco After Party. And the Churro Bites were spectacular (the hot/sweet sauce is essential). And our Vanilla frappes, Kendell Square Mimosa, and Paulaner Octoberfest beer were all quite tasty. The service was good, the decor is great, and the atmosphere is sheer fun. I just wish the food was better. The line wasn't that much of a problem for us because I used the yelp waitlist. I just wish they had two lines at the door - one for new 'applicants' and one for yelpers checking in. Or better yet a way of saying 'I'm here' via text.
My friend brought me to breakfast here on a Monday. Thankfully, it wasn't too crowded, as I assume it is on the weekends. I had the Irish Benny, and it was great! Corned beef with a poached egg is a great way to start the day. The restaurant has a very interesting theme - art and decor. It was kind of a fun challenge to figure out what everything was about or not about. Our waiter was really good too, which is always a plus.
