Never has there been a lesson in instagram vs reality as the one received by The Merchant House.
It was heavily raining and there were people stood smoking in the very small doorway. I had a baby tucked into my coat and they didn’t move to clear access. Not that this is anything to do with the restaurant but you never know who reads these so if that was you... nice.
Seeing a post regarding ‘fully loaded’ fries my friends and I decided to visit this establishment on a whim.
We sat downstairs and it was loud. It was so loud upstairs I really struggled to hear the gent working behind the bar to order my food.
The menu is appetising and we decided to share ‘fully loaded fries’ based on the Instagram posts.
The waiter came and delivered the first bits of food and barely looked up at us to explain what was what. Touch rude we thought. He came back with the next items of food and we asked about condiments to his back as he walked away not turning round to answer us.
At this point we’d already noted that the food was not similar to the Instagram pictures which had encouraged our visit...
the waiter came back and brought us probably the equivalent of half a large gherkin sliced in a paper tub (£2 for bread & butter pickles).
We took pictures of the food and mostly laughed about it.
As we were finishing our meals the waiter came back and tried to take our food away... I literally had a fork in one hand and gravy pot in the other and couldn’t stop laughing as my friend wrestled our plates/baskets back to our table (I mean you have to laugh, it was hysterical, what was he thinking).
The venue got louder and louder as people shouted over eachother and jostled for space in the cramped basement. in the end I couldn’t stand the noise anymore mixed with the disappointment of the meal and the fact my baby was getting agitated I just got up and left my friends to sit in the car and wait for them.
So disappointed were my friends that they decided to say something about our meal and showed a different member of staff the pictures we’d seen on Instagram vs the pictures of our food and she agreed it wasn’t good enough. She went to get her manager who was also in agreement and he said we could get a full refund. Awesome.
My friends were instructed to stand to one side in the loud packed bar whilst he sorted it. 17 long minutes. later he came back and said he couldn’t refund the drinks (no problem there was nothing wrong with the cola) and actually he could only refund half the meal... I mean.... expectation management doesn’t seem to be the strength of this place. We took the partial refund and left.
My friend unfollowed them on Instagram in the car on the way home because apparently ‘I cant deal with that kind of disappointment, that place has gotta go’.
You may think we are whinging and should be happy we got a partial refund etc but I’ll leave the pictures for you to decide :)
