Lovely spot for dinner. View out over the Liffey and Ha'penny bridge if you get a table near the window. Moderately priced menu. Veggie and gluten free options. Gluten free bread as an option with soup. I didn't ask about dessert as I didn't want one but from what I could see they didn't have a GF option on the menu. Christmas menu is 3 courses for 50 euro. I got just a main which are mostly prices around the 30 euro mark (supplement for steak). The venison dish was GF delicious, would order again. The restaurant has a flight of stairs to climb to get into and then another if you're seated on the upper floor (not wheelchair friendly from what I saw). Quite small and pokey but cosy and clearly in demand as it was very busy while we were there.
Give four star
I began reading the on-line reviews of the Winding Stair restaurant while sitting looking at the food I had been served, partly as a way of avoiding having to eat it. Are these other reviews genuine? I thought I had better set the record straight. The menu is quite limited and the prices are eye-wateringly expensive. Our group all felt that the food was quite poor for a reasonably priced restaurant, never mind this astonishingly expensive place. My chowder seemed to be a bowl of milk with some fish and potatoes in it - watch out for the clam shells lurking below the surface as well. A few of us had the duck breast, which was lukewarm and accompanied by four cherries and some asparagus. Not a lot to it for the price charged. Others of us had steak, which was stringy and gristly, with a knob of butter dumped on it in lieu of any kind of sauce. The place was packed on this Saturday night - which is usually a good sign - but all this did was make the dining area very hot indeed and quite stifling. Our waiter forgot to bring the coffee that we ordered but apart from that the service was adequate, although we were still stuck with the 12.5% service charge - read the small print folks -no matter what we thought of the service we had.We were on a family occasion and so no-one wanted to make a fuss, but we all agreed afterward that the experience had been very disappointing indeed, to put it mildly. So, in summary, if you intend to eat at the Winding Stair, make sure to bring your life savings and be prepared to have to get something else to eat on the way home.Amongst the very worst places I have ever eaten at, and particularly poor value for money - thank God I won't ever have to come here again.
